Calibre is one of the best tools for managing and reading eBooks on your computer, especially for synchronizing your library with a standalone reader. Now, Calibre 9.5 is rolling out with more interface updates and bug fixes, on top of several other recent updates.

First, Calibre 9.5 has a new optional column for showing your reading progress. You can enable it from Preferences > Add your own columns, clicking the plus button, then selecting Read progress. There’s also a new option to filter by highlight style in the annotations browser, and the driver for Tolino eReaders now supports newer firmware versions. Also, when editing books, there’s a tool to remove unused images, much like the existing feature to remove unused CSS—that can help trim down file sizes without sacrificing any contents.

When reading an eBook, you can now display the pages from the paper book page list (instead of the digital pages), if that data is available in the file. There’s also a reset button in the reading stats panel, if you want to start fresh. Finally, there’s a pile of bug fixes, in the below list.

  • Fix overridden icons from config directory not switching between dark/light variants on theme change
  • Fix: Use MOBI fallback for KFX format when downloading news periodicals
  • Edit book: Restore focus to editor after showing search count popup message
  • Fix a bug in KEPUB markup removal when there are empty kobo spans
  • RB Input: Ensure files are extracted within container dir (CVE-2026-30853)
  • Book list: Fix ctrl+shift+arrow key not moving the currently selected book. Fixes #2142950

This isn’t a significant update, but it comes after several other Calibre updates, so new features and improvements are coming at an impressive rate. Calibre 9.4 in February introduced the reading states mode and improved the cover grid view, and version 9.3 improved KEPUB support and fixed issues with Windows. There have been six major releases for Calibre in 2026 so far, so if you haven’t updated in a while, you’re missing out.

I’ve Been Using Calibre All Wrong

I’ve been using Calibre wrong for the past several months. While I had Calibre running on my server, and it worked to send books to my Kindle via Send to Kindle, I actually had it installed completely wrong and should have been using it differently the entire time.

You can download Calibre from the official website, for Windows, macOS, or Linux. The application is also available in the software repositories on many Linux distributions, like the “calibre” package on Ubuntu, but some of those sources (including Ubuntu) don’t have version 9.5 yet.
