Ex Machina

A Black Mirror-esque reality

Ex Machina is a sci-fi movie that is a staple watch for fans of psychological sci-fi thrillers. The story focuses on Caleb Smith (About Time’s Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer from a tech company who wins a chance to spend a week at the secluded estate of his company’s brilliant but mysterious CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Once he reaches Nathan’s house, he signs an NDA and learns he’s been chosen to take part in an unusual experiment: evaluating the intelligence and humanity of Ava (The Danish Girl’s Alicia Vikander), a lifelike humanoid robot with artificial intelligence.

As Caleb begins interacting with her, their conversations grow increasingly unsettling, taking on a romantic nature. But soon, Caleb is thrown into a manipulative game that he did not sign up for.

Ex Machina received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won for Best Visual Effects at the 88th Academy Awards.
