Razer’s new eGPU dock costs more and delivers less

Razer inaugurated a new generation of Thunderbolt 5 external GPU with the launch of the Core X V2, alongside its new Razer Thunderbolt 5. But it is a notable step in the anterior EGPUS of Razer.
One of the most popular EGPUS of the Thunderbolt 3 generation was Core X, which provided 650 W in electricity for a three -locations graphics card – that you had to provide, of course. The Core X V2 allows the GPUs up to four wide locations, but this time, you will have to provide the two GPUs And food.
Worse still, the original Core X also included a handful of USB slots and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Core X V2 apparently does not do it. Instead, Razer’s Core X V2 page is trying to sell you one of Razer’s Thunderbolt quays. At $ 349.99, it is a difficult pill to swallow for potential buyers of Core X V2: you will have to buy a graphics card, an electrical supply and perhaps an optional quay.
The first Thunderbolt 5 quay from Razer is not cheap either. A Mercury White edition costs $ 389.99, while the RGB Bling-out option, the Chroma edition, costs $ 399.99.
Core X V2 of Razer requires a lot of your wallet
The Core X V2 accompanies a four -locations card, a stage of its predecessor. The V2 measures 16.59 inches deep 7.76 inches wide and 8.51 inch high, and is designed for ATX power supplies. The ventilated steel chassis also includes an integrated 120 mm fan for additional cooling.
RAZER says you will have to buy a diet that can meet your card feeding requirements, more additional 230W for Core X V2 itself. (Presumably, this includes the supply of the quay as well as the 140 W thrust of power to your laptop, online with the Thunderbolt 5.) specification

Razer
Razer’s price is also higher, even after omissions. The Razer Core made its debut in 2016 for $ 500, followed by Core X for $ 299. Now the price has rebounded again, even after cutting the supply of the previous models included.
At this point, you may wonder why you spend $ 350 if you have to always pay additional money for an external GPU And a diet. But there is another problem: at the moment, Thunderbolt 5 is generally only found on high -end game laptops, which already have a robust GPU. Part of the promise of an external GPU quay is that you can buy a relatively modest laptop, then connect it to an external GPU card for games after working hours. This scenario does not yet seem likely for a few months, or more.
To be fair, Razer’s Core X V2 should work with PCs equipped with Thunderbolt 4 ports. But the increased band of Thunderbolt 5 corresponds better to the high -end capabilities of today’s high -end GPUs.
Razer’s anterior platform is good at its new TB5 model
A Thunderbolt 5 quay, however, seems to be a more useful option. For the moment, most laptops of play – again, where Thunderbolt 5 is doing its debut – still includes Gobs of Hardwired Ports. But I really liked the Chroma Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock, which is a good omen for the Thunderbolt 5 model. (You can use the platform with a laptop or a PC equipped with Thunderbolt 4 too.) PCworld included it in its list of the best Thunderbolt quays.

Razer
The Razer Thunderbolt Dock is a 10 port quay (HUB), with three Thunderbolt 5 connections in addition to the dedicated port between the quay and the laptop. This means that the platform must support three 4K 144Hz screens. The platform also includes an Ethernet gigabit port, a pair of USB-A 10 Gbit / s connections, a USB-C 10 Gbit / s, a UHS-II card location and a micro / headphone jack. It is also actively cooled, with a small fan inside.
The Quai de Razer is also delivered with an open M.2 location, specifically for SSD PCIe Gen 4 X4. I loved the performance that a moored SSD provides. The dock also supports the sharing of Thunderbolt, which can connect two PCs equipped with Thunderbolt. And, of course, there is also optional RGB.
The platform is delivered with a one -year warranty.

Razer
Nothing is not cheap, unfortunately. The latest Thunderbolt hardware store in Razer looks great, but the amount you spend really puts a shock absorber on the bling.
