The Opening Attack on Markwayne Mullin Is So Lame You Can’t Believe The Washington Post Bothered – RedState

When President Trump fired Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security and nominated Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin, many of us breathed a sigh of relief. If, like me, you were an early Noem supporter, you probably became increasingly uncomfortable as Corey Lewandowski became an advisor and… TMI! TMI!… rumor of a lover. During Trump 1.0, Lewandowski was at Ground Zero for almost every shady act.

If you look at Noem then Lewandowski and say there’s no reason for him to sleep with her, keep in mind that he was “romantically associated” with Hope Hicks, who is clearly 25 times more beautiful. As they say, you have to respect your game. Lewandowski was also linked to backbiting and sabotaging his rivals within the administration, a defining characteristic of the first Trump administration. So when stories of contracts going to favored suppliers and other nonsense started leaking out of DHS, it wasn’t really the effort to investigate them because, deep in your heart, you knew they were true.
I have to admit I was a little skeptical of Mullin at first, but I’ve warmed up to him. My colleague Bob Hoge has quite a profile of this man; see Who is our future new DHS secretary? Markwayne Mullin has a Heckuva – RedState story. He dropped out of college to take over the family plumbing business and turned it into a multi-million dollar business. Along the way, he acquired a 5-0 record as a professional mixed martial arts fighter. The fact that he was stopped from kicking the ass of a Teamsters thug during a Senate hearing was just icing on the cake.

Regardless, now that Mullin has the DHS nomination, we can expect the hits to fall, and The Washington Post did not disappoint: Homeland Security’s pick employed felon who illegally stored guns on the job – The Washington Post.
Eh? Is that it? Is this what you have?
Apparently, when Mullin Plumbing took over another company, it acquired an employee named Timothy L. Saylor. Saylor was a convicted felon, which prohibited him from possessing firearms. He said Mullin knew of his criminal history but nonetheless allowed him to store the guns at Mullin Plumbing in Oklahoma.
Saylor’s prior convictions, all in California, include two felony convictions in 1995 for possessing a loaded sawed-off shotgun and, separately, for brandishing a weapon and threatening to kill someone inside a home he suspected of robbing him, according to court records. His record also includes failure to appear, which made lewd threats and assault with a chemical – stemming from an incident in which he threw bleach at another inmate who was defecating in the cell they shared.
Saylor claims Mullin knew he was a criminal and still let him keep the guns he illegally possessed safe at the business. Mullin says he didn’t know and never ran a background check on Saylor because he was already an employee.
In 2009, a “confidential informant” called the cops and claimed Saylor kept a cache of guns in the office and had threatened his co-workers. Police searched the safe and found a large quantity of ammunition (define large) and two weapons. One was registered to Mullin, the other had been stolen in North Carolina. Saylor served two years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Taken at its worst, this is the case of Mullin giving a man a break and treating him with dignity, forgetting that no good deed goes unpunished. If he had known about Saylor’s criminal record and decided that he was valuable enough as an employee to retain him, he might have easily felt that it wasn’t his place to report this guy to the cops and that it might go some way toward helping a troubled man cope with society. If he hadn’t given Saylor the gun or if Saylor had hinted or told him that he was borrowing it from someone else, he would have even less reason to care. The more likely case is that Mullin did not know that Saylor was a criminal and that they liked to shoot together.
Either way, I don’t care. If the worst they have is Mullin bending the law to try to rehabilitate a man, I can live with that.
Mullin’s confirmation hearing will take place on March 18. It would be a shock if something else wasn’t made public before then, but to begin with, it’s pathetic.
