We always hear about the happiest countries in the world. But what about happiness closer to home? A new WalletHub report ranks the happiest cities in America for 2026, and the results reveal some interesting patterns about where Americans are thriving and what makes those places work.

“Location can influence how bright or gloomy our daily lives feel,” Adam McCann, financial writer at WalletHub, says in the report.

To identify the happiest cities in the United States, WalletHub analyzed 182 of the nation’s largest cities across 29 indicators tied to happiness and quality of life. Those factors range from depression rates and adequate sleep to income growth, commute times, divorce rates and daily leisure time.

The results suggest that happiness isn’t necessarily tied to the biggest or wealthiest cities. Instead, the places that rise to the top tend to perform well on everyday quality-of-life measures like strong physical health, reasonable work hours, adequate sleep, financial stability and a sense of community.

The ranking is the latest in a growing wave of reports exploring where people live best in the U.S. In a separate analysis, a report on the most welcoming places highlighted destinations where visitors say they feel especially embraced by local communities. In another recent report on the best places to raise a family, many of the same lifestyle factors—green space, community ties, quality of life—played a central role. And in earlier analyses of the happiest cities in America, similar themes emerged, including access to nature, strong community connections and a healthy work-life balance.

WalletHub’s 2026 report on the happiest cities in the U.S. takes a deeper look at those dynamics, ranking locations across dozens of indicators tied to health, finances and everyday quality of life. Ultimately, the list is helpful not only for people looking for a great place to live but also for travelers searching for destinations that get the balance of life right. After all, what’s better than visiting a happy city that combines access to nature, outdoor recreation and a strong sense of community?

What Is The Happiest City In The U.S.?

According to WalletHub’s 2026 report, Fremont, California, takes the top spot as the happiest city in America. The Bay Area city is followed by Bismarck, North Dakota, in second place and Scottsdale, Arizona, in third.

According to WalletHub, Fremont performs exceptionally well across several measures tied to life satisfaction and mental well-being. The city has the nation’s highest life satisfaction rate and the lowest separation and divorce rate. It also has the highest share of households earning more than $75,000 per year—an income benchmark that research frequently links to increased happiness. Residents in Fremont also report fewer mentally unhealthy days per month than those in any other city analyzed.

Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, ranks second largely because of its strong health outcomes and quality-of-life indicators, says WalletHub. Residents report high levels of physical well-being and benefit from the largest average amount of daily leisure time among the cities in the study. The city also scores highly on the Sharecare Community Well-Being Index, which measures how much people like where they live, feel safe and take pride in their community.

Scottsdale, which comes in third, stands out for its strong health metrics and active lifestyle, according to WalletHub. More than 88% of adults in the city report good or better health, and nearly 87% participate in physical activities. Scottsdale also has a high share of households earning more than $75,000 annually, a factor that contributes to its strong overall happiness score.

What Factors Shape Happiness In Cities?

The findings reinforce a long-standing conclusion in happiness research: income can improve well-being, but only to a point.

“Studies show that earning more than $75,000 a year does not lead to greater happiness,” McCann writes in the report.

Beyond that threshold, other factors begin to matter more. Access to parks and recreation, strong social connections, reasonable work hours and a sense of safety and belonging can all shape how satisfied people feel with their daily lives.

“Things like housing affordability, safety, social connectedness, access to green space, congestion and walkability can all shape happiness,” says Matthew J. Grawitch, Ph.D., director of strategic research at Saint Louis University’s School for Professional Studies, who contributed to the report’s expert panel.

What The Data Reveals About Happiness

Some of the most revealing insights from the report come from the individual indicators used to measure happiness.

Sleep, for example, appears to be a major factor. South Burlington, Vermont, has the highest adequate-sleep rate in the country, followed by Burlington, Vermont; Missoula, Montana; Portland, Oregon; and Denver, Colorado. South Burlington also ranks fourth overall among the happiest cities in America.

Mental health indicators tell another part of the story. The cities with the lowest depression rates include Jersey City, New Jersey; Hialeah, Florida; Miami, Florida; Pearl City, Hawaii; and Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Leisure time also appears to play an important role. Bismarck residents report the most average leisure time per day of any city in the study, a statistic that helps explain why the North Dakota capital ranks second overall.

Physical activity is another strong predictor of well-being. South Burlington again leads the nation in sports participation, followed by Seattle, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Arizona and Washington, D.C. Notably, both Scottsdale and Gilbert appear in the overall top 10 happiest cities.

Taken together, these indicators highlight an important theme: happiness tends to be higher in cities where residents are healthy, well-rested and able to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Trends In The Happiest Cities

The rankings also reveal several geographic trends. California dominates the top of the list, with Fremont, Irvine and San Jose all appearing in the top 10. Arizona is another major player, with Scottsdale, Gilbert and Chandler ranking near the top and Tempe and Peoria also making the top 25.

Meanwhile, many of the country’s largest cities rank much lower. New York comes in at No. 59 overall, Los Angeles ranks No. 87 and Chicago lands at No. 83. Seattle, at No. 15, is the highest-ranking major metropolitan area in the study.

The pattern suggests that while large cities may offer economic opportunities and cultural amenities, smaller and mid-sized cities often perform better on everyday quality-of-life indicators.

For travelers looking beyond the usual tourist hubs, many of these cities also offer compelling reasons to visit, from Vermont’s outdoorsy towns to Arizona’s sunshine-filled desert communities.

The Least Happy Cities In America

At the other end of the spectrum, several cities in the South and Midwest rank lowest for overall happiness. Detroit, Michigan, finishes last among the 182 cities analyzed. Memphis, Tennessee; Shreveport, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; and Huntington, West Virginia round out the bottom five.

These cities tend to struggle across multiple categories tied to well-being, including health outcomes, economic challenges and community indicators.

The data highlights some stark contrasts with the cities at the top of the list. Detroit has the lowest adequate-sleep rate in the country, while Huntington records the highest depression rate. Cleveland also ranks highest for separation and divorce rates.

Together, those statistics illustrate the challenges facing communities that rank lowest for overall happiness.

Happiest Cities in America: The Bottom Line

According to WalletHub’s 2026 report, the happiest cities in America are not necessarily the biggest or most glamorous. They are the places where people are healthier, better rested, financially stable and more connected to their communities. In many cases, those conditions are easier to achieve in cities where work hours are manageable, leisure time is plentiful and people feel a strong sense of belonging.

For travelers, that may be another reason to pay attention to the list. Cities where residents report high levels of well-being often share the same qualities that make for memorable trips: easy access to nature, rich local culture, welcoming communities and a pace of life that leaves time to actually enjoy it.

And while no city can guarantee happiness, the data suggests that where you live—or where you visit—can play a meaningful role in shaping how satisfied you feel with daily life.
