Binghamton man pleads guilty to fatal stabbing at Salvation Army store

A Binghamton man faces 17 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to stabbing a man to death on Washington Street.
The Broome County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Michael W. Brutvan, 37, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on March 17 for the May 2025 stabbing death of Kevin L. Ray, 57, of Endicott.
Officers responded to a report of a stabbing around 5:15 p.m. on May 13, 2025, at the Salvation Army located at 131 Washington St. At the scene, they found Ray suffering from stab wounds to his shoulder and neck. Paramedics provided lifesaving measures and transported Ray to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Brutvan had entered the store which was hosting a community meal and stabbed the victim several times. Following an investigation, police indicated that the stabbing was not a random act and that the two men knew each other.
