Blue State Democrats Block Debate On Bill To Notify ICE Of Illegal Immigrants Arrested For Violent Crimes

Democrats in the Minnesota House of Representatives on Monday blocked consideration of legislation that would require local prosecutors to notify the federal government when they arrest illegal immigrants for violent crimes.
Border Czar Tom Homan announced the end of Operation Metro Surge, a crackdown on illegal immigration in Minnesota, during a press conference on February 12, stating that more than 12,000 illegal immigrants had been arrested during the crackdown. Republicans, who hold a slight majority in the body, said House File 16 was needed to resolve the operations controversy before the motion to consider it was defeated 67-67. “It is indisputable that any alleged or actual negative externalities resulting from Operation Metro Surge would not have occurred without the cooperation between local, state and federal law enforcement,” Republican state Rep. Walter Hudson said during debate over whether to consider the bill.

“This bill creates streamlined communication among all those responsible for enforcing immigration laws,” said the bill’s author, Republican state Rep. Max Rymer.
The presence of hundreds of law enforcement personnel in Minnesota has become controversial following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good by Department of Homeland Security agents in January during clashes between federal agents and so-called “rapid response networks” opposed to crackdowns on illegal immigration.
Democrats opposed the legislation, saying the federal government’s efforts to enforce immigration laws triggered the crisis.
“This bill is a red herring intended to distract us from the real problems facing Minnesotans right now: a federal government that is violating our constitutional protections and undermining our economy,” said Democratic state Rep. Sandra Feist.
“This is not a local law enforcement issue,” said Democratic state Rep. Jamie Long. “In fact, Tom Homan himself has said he doesn’t want local law enforcement to be immigration agents.” (RELATED: Left-wing Karen Says ‘I Don’t Care’ When ICE Agent Explains They’re Pursuing Murderous Child Rapist)
Homan told reporters during a February 4 meeting press conference that arresting illegal aliens with criminal records in prisons would require fewer officers than if they were released into the community.
“It only takes one or two officers to provide custody of a foreign criminal target rather than eight or ten officers going out into the community and stopping this threat to public safety,” Homan said.
“This frees up more agents to arrest or deport criminal aliens,” Homan added. “More officers dealing with criminal aliens directly from prisons means fewer officers on the street conducting criminal operations. That’s smart law enforcement, not less law enforcement. It’s safer for the community, safer for the officers and safer for the alien.”
