Corey Lewandowski Accused of Cashing In on DHS Access in Contractor Complaints – RedState

House Democrats are taking a closer look at Corey Lewandowski’s role at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as allegations related to contracts and influence raise questions beyond him and how the Trump administration is represented at a critical agency.

According to reports based on interviews with officials and industry sources, those concerns reached the White House after contractors raised the alarm about how DHS affairs were being run, putting the problem inside the administration rather than outside.

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have now formalized these concerns in a letter demanding the preservation of documents related to Lewandowski’s activities and influence within DHS.

“We write with deep concern regarding reports of serious misconduct at the highest levels of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). At the center of these allegations is Mr. Corey Lewandowski, who continues to use his access to DHS leadership to exert outsized and undue influence over the Department.”

Lawmakers describe Lewandowski as leveraging proximity to DHS leaders in a way that goes beyond a typical advisory role, and that distinction is important because the allegation is not just about access, but what was done with it.

If this access were monetized, or even perceived as such by contractors seeking to work for DHS, it raises questions about decisions made under the administration’s authority and creates visibility that goes well beyond a simple number.

The Oversight Committee requires a wide range of documents related to this activity.

“We require that DHS maintain all internal communications and records regarding Mr. Lewandowski’s role within the Department, as well as the Department’s practices, policies, and procedures related to contracts, personnel, and the management of classified records.”

The scope of this request is not narrow. This involves decisions on contracting, personnel matters and even the handling of classified documents, placing the issue at the heart of the agency’s operations rather than at its margins.

This is consistent with reports that some contractors believed access to DHS work was tied to Lewandowski personally, concerns serious enough to be raised internally within the administration.

“Some companies have complained to the Trump administration that Lewandowski may have profited personally from the DHS contracting process. Lewandowski denies these allegations.”

These allegations create a problem for an administration that has emphasized accountability and oversight within federal agencies because it must now answer for conduct that it may not have authorized but is now associated with.

One account describes how entrepreneurs understood the situation as it was happening, not in hindsight.

“We are guaranteed this contract, but we need to make sure we properly thank the person who gave it to us,” a representative said, naming Lewandowski, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

Lewandowski has denied receiving payments related to DHS contracts, and DHS has said it complies with ethical requirements related to its role, but these responses do not explain why contractors raised their concerns within the administration or how those concerns reached the White House in the first place.

Rather, the report documents a gap between what was formally authorized and what was understood on the ground, where contractors came away believing that their influence may have played a role in securing DHS’s work.

This view has its own consequences: once established, it attaches to the administration, whether or not it directed the behavior, and becomes part of the way its decisions are judged.

The records currently being sought will determine whether these concerns hold. If they do, Lewandowski hasn’t just created a problem for himself. He has made his role in the Trump administration a liability for it.
