Dyneema’s New Fiber Composite Is Lighter, Stronger, and More Durable Than Ever

If you go Back in time 150 years and told people that in the future they would transport everything they need to live for a week on their backs, you would get out of the city. The transport of equipment is the work of horses and mules, not people! Fast advance to the present, however, and here we are, Schlepping in the hinterland with the essential elements on the back. Progress!
The good news is that today everything you need for a week weighs considerably less than 150 years ago. The ultra-light hiking movement, born from obsessive hikers and finally widely adopted by weekend warriors, has motivated innovation in the outdoor equipment industry for over 20 years. Each iteration of backpacks, tents and sleeping bags has been lighter, stronger and warmer.
But just when you think they couldn’t improve, these backpacks become lighter and more robust. Today, Dyneema is launching a new fabric composite called (surprise) Dyneema Woven Composite which is used in updated backpacks by cult classic hyperlite Mountain Gear, which is a long -standing collaborator.
Light like a feather
With the kind permission of Dyneema
The homonymous fabric of Dyneema has long been noted to be not only strong, durable and waterproof, but also a featherweight. Its new fabric, Dyneema woven composites, is designed for the ultralime hiking community. It merges a dyneema face fabric entirely woven with the pre -existing composite fabric of Dyneema.
Dyneema Woven Composites has been created jointly with Mountain Gear hyperlite, and for the moment is available exclusively in the main ultra -light backpacks of the company, including Southwest, Junction and Windrider models.
Mike St. Pierre founded Hyperlite in 2009 and was one of the first manufacturers to adopt Dyneema (then known as Cubène fiber). Also in a shattered manner, this hyperlite attached in ultralight fabric to backpackers. The minimalist and stripped conceptions of the company and the unshakable commitment to quality – my 2019 junction pack, with hundreds of kilometers, seems to have done the day I bought it – made the company a natural adjustment for this collaboration.
Strong as a board

Thanks to this external layer of Dyneema, the new composite woven has 10 times the resistance to abrasion and five times the resistance to the tear of the older fabric. The old statistic is particularly good news for anyone hiking in places like the Southwest desert, where the pack against Hard Rock tends to destroy your equipment quickly.
