The iPhone 17 Air will apparently have a titanium frame, which makes no sense

Apple generally knows what it does with regard to industrial design, but the last reported decision of the company causes more confusion among fans and experts from Apple.
According to GF Securities analyst, Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17 air will have a titanium frame, while the iPhone 17, 17 pro and 17 pro Max will all be aluminum. This is a counter-intuitive choice, to say the least, because the titanium is heavier than aluminum, and the iPhone 17 air should be marketed as an ultra-light smartphone. And last November, several sources insisted that the whole range of the iPhone 17 is aluminum.
In addition to being heavier than aluminum, titanium is considerably stronger, and it is possible that the thin air of the iPhone 17 needs this more robust frame in order to avoid another bendgate scandal. The problem with this justification is that Apple seems to have already resolved the BENDGATE problem without resorting to the titanium. In 2014, the iPhone 6 in 6.9 mm aluminum has looked (sometimes), but the 5.1 mm aluminum iPad Pro in 2024, did not fold (outside the YouTube cascades hunting the clicks). Apple said that it had reinforced the design using a metal “hood” on the logic board in the center of the device, and it goes from one why would also work on the air of the iPhone 17.
PU made the prediction this week in an investor note seen by MacRumors. He is a prolific expert – we reported on his latest Apple product calendar last month – but with a mixed record: when writing the editorial time, Appletrack class at 50%, so his predictions must be taken with a pinch of salt.
