Democrats Are Quietly Replacing Schumer, and He’s the Last to Know – RedState

Chuck Schumer (D-New York) remains the Democratic leader in the Senate, but within his own party, some Democrats are quietly testing whether he could be replaced.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, that process has already begun behind the scenes, with lawmakers conducting an informal vote count to determine whether there is enough support to remove the New York Democrat from his leadership position.
“Some lawmakers conducted informal counts to see if there were enough votes to remove the New York Democrat from his leadership position.”
The concern is not limited to individual senators. Meetings between Democratic chiefs of staff have included discussions about how to pressure Schumer to step down.
“Many said concern about Schumer’s leadership was widespread…meetings between Democratic chiefs of staff…often turn to…how to pressure him to step down.”
Senators including Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Tina Smith (D-MN) all participated in discussions about Schumer’s leadership, with advisers exploring possible challenge scenarios and lawmakers comparing notes on domestic support.
A group of progressive senators also coordinated more directly, maintaining a “Fight Club” chat where they discussed how to counter Schumer’s preferred candidates and the approach to key elections.
The divide centers on disagreements over strategy, particularly over whether Schumer has favored more centrist candidates in competitive races while sidelining a new group of challengers pushing for a more aggressive approach.
Some Democrats went further, describing Schumer as “a liability to their voters” and “an obstacle to change.”
At least some Democrats and aides have also raised the possibility that Schumer will pledge to step down rather than seek re-election in 2028.

Some of that frustration dates back to past disputes, including Schumer’s handling of a prolonged government shutdown and internal disagreements over negotiating strategy, which some Democrats say left members feeling left out of key decisions.
At a gathering of top Democratic donors and party leaders, donors pressured senators and their aides to embrace a plan to replace Schumer.
“Donors were calling for ‘a plan to replace Schumer’… some calling it the ‘Chuck Chuck movement.’

Names are starting to surface, with Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) seen by some as a possible successor and progressives discussing Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-M.D.) as another option.
Schumer, for his part, pushed back on the notion that his position is under threat, insisting that his support within the caucus remains “deep and strong” and emphasizing his focus on the upcoming election.
“It goes with the territory, it’s true for anyone who’s a leader.”
Lawmakers count the votes. Staff members discuss how to pressure him to step down. Donors are calling for a plan to replace it.
He’s still on the chair.
They’ve already moved the meeting.
