Virginia passes 15 anti-gun bills in 60 days as Spanberger vows to sign

The Commonwealth of Virginia, once the birthplace of American freedom and home to the Bill of Rights, is witnessing a historic betrayal in real time.
On March 14, the Virginia General Assembly closed its 2026 legislative session and rammed through more than 15 pieces of anti-gun legislation. In just 60 days, the anti-gun left has nearly rolled back the gun rights of millions of law-abiding Virginia residents.
Their jewel of tyranny? SB 749 and HB 217, two bills banning “assault weapons.”
These identical bills landed on newly elected Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s desk during the final days of the legislative session and are currently awaiting her signature.

She promised to promulgate them.
For years, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and our dedicated members have opposed these unconstitutional violations that have appeared in state legislatures across the country.
Just a few weeks ago, thanks to massive grassroots activism and pressure from gun rights organizations like GOA, a similar ban on “assault weapons” was defeated in New Mexico. And last year in Virginia, former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed 27 anti-gun bills — including a ban on “assault weapons.”

But with the election of Spanberger-backed billionaire Michael Bloomberg in November 2025, the governor’s seat is now filled with the endorsement of the radical gun control lobby. Anti-gun Democrats also flipped a dozen pro-gun seats in the Virginia House of Delegates while maintaining a slim majority in the Virginia Senate.
And within hours of taking control of the governor’s mansion and Legislature, anti-gun lawmakers began drafting numerous gun control measures, promising to rush them through the General Assembly.
Make no mistake: SB 749/HB 217 has nothing to do with “safety” and everything to do with taking away your Second Amendment rights. This legislation targets the most popular firearms in the United States – tools used by millions of law-abiding citizens for self-defense, competition, and sport. According to the FBI, nearly twice as many people are murdered with hands or fists than with guns of any type. And more than three times more with knives. Yet anti-gun radicals want us to believe that semi-automatic firearms should be banned.
GUN RIGHTS OVER PRIVATE PROPERTY DEBATED IN THE SUPREME COURT
But by arbitrarily labeling semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and rifles as “assault firearms” based on common features like folding stocks or threaded barrels, anti-gunners are actively suppressing your ability to defend yourself and your family with your tool of choice.
Additionally, the legislation targets standard capacity magazines, calling any magazine with more than 15 rounds a “high capacity ammunition feeding device.”
But with the election of Spanberger-backed billionaire Michael Bloomberg in November 2025, the governor’s seat is now filled with the endorsement of the radical gun control lobby.
Supporters of SB 749 point to similar laws that exist in other states, but the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision was clear: The government must prove that a gun regulation is consistent with this country’s historical tradition.
DOJ PROMISES “MUCH MORE ACTION” ON GUN RIGHTS WITH NEW SECOND AMENDMENT ENFORCEMENT SECTION
There is no historical tradition of banning the nation’s most common firearms. There is no constitutional basis for targeting certain semi-automatic firearms and using state power to punish anyone who buys, sells or transfers them after July 1, 2026.
The anti-gun Democrats’ argument that these are “weapons of war” is a lazy buzzword. These weapons are the modern equivalent of the musket, the standard weapon of the citizen-soldier.
And let’s be clear: the Second Amendment was not written for deer hunting; it was written to ensure that the “body of the people” would always have the means to resist a tyrannical government.
‘THE VIEW’ HOSTS DEFEND GUN OWNERSHIP AS A CHECK TO TYRANNY AFTER YEARS OF CRITICAL GUN RIGHTS SHOW
When George Mason wrote the Virginia Bill of Rights, he did not mince his words when it came to our right to own firearms. “That a well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained in the use of arms, is the proper, natural and safe defense of a free State, therefore the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed…”
It’s easy to see where the inspiration for the Second Amendment to the American Bill of Rights came from.

By depriving Virginians of these tools, Spanberger and his allies are intentionally shifting the balance of power from the people to the state and thereby endangering liberty and freedom. It is clear that they have forgotten, or worse yet, are deliberately ignoring the motto of this great Commonwealth: “Sic semper tyrannis”, which translates to “thus always to tyrants”.
And within hours of taking control of the governor’s mansion and Legislature, anti-gun lawmakers began drafting numerous gun control bills, promising to rush them through the General Assembly.
Make no mistake: America’s gun owners will not stand idly by while the Spanberger-led Virginia government throws our gun rights in the trash.

The Gun Owners Foundation – the legal wing of GOA – is already working with our friends at the Virginia Citizens Defense League to challenge these violations in court. No law-abiding Virginian should be subject to such abhorrent, un-American laws.
The political and legal fights ahead to restore gun rights in Virginia will be long and difficult, but the GOA will continue until every word of gun control is repealed. And as we fight, we live with absolute determination the words of the great founding father and lifelong Virginian Patrick Henry: “The great goal is that every man should be armed. Anyone who is able can have a gun. »
