President Donald Trump announced the start of negotiations between the United States and Iran on Monday morning.

Oil prices have climbed since Operation Epic Fury began, with WTI Futures crude closing at $98.32 on Friday, up more than $30 from the market close of $67.02 on Feb. 27, the day before the conflict with Iran began, according to Investing.com after Iran attacked several ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said Iranian power plants would be spared for five days, pending the outcome of negotiations. “I am pleased to report that the United States of America and Iran have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the country,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Based on the tenor and tone of these in-depth, detailed and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have directed the Department of War to postpone any military strike against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a period of five days, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.”

In an article published Saturday on Truth Social, Trump previously gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to allow traffic through the Strait of Hormuz before beginning attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure.

“If Iran does not COMPLETELY, WITHOUT THREAT, open the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 hours from this very moment, the United States of America will strike and wipe out their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE LARGEST FIRST!” Trump warned.

Trump announced the start of military operations against Iran on February 28. In response, Iran began launching missile and drone strikes against targets in Kuwait, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Trump had urged U.S. allies to join efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a March 14 article on Truth Social.

“Let’s hope that China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and others, who are affected by this artificial coercion, will send ships to the region so that the Strait of Hormuz will no longer be a threat by a nation that has been totally decapitated. Meanwhile, the United States will bombard the coastline and continually shoot Iranian boats and ships out of the water,” Trump said.

Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East envoy, said in a March 2 interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity that Iranian diplomats have said the regime will continue to enrich uranium and say they already have enough material for nearly a dozen weapons.
