Rescue teams in northern Germany are working to refloat a humpback whale stranded in the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea. Experts gathered on Timmendorfer Strand beach on Tuesday after a midnight high tide failed to free the animal. German news agency DPA reports that crews were trying to find ways to bring the whale back to deeper waters. Rescuers had already tried on Monday afternoon with police boats and rubber boats. Firefighters are also using drones to guide efforts. Carsten Mannheimer of Sea Shepherd says the whale is alive and continues to breathe and make sounds. Experts believe it is a young male.
