A Texas man has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing another man at the direction of his ex-girlfriend.
Oscar Javier Barbosa was stabbed outside a YMCA in San Antonio, Texas, on February 19, KENS reports, citing San Antonio police. On Sunday, March 22, Abel Ali Rivas was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance in connection with the shooting, the police said. Rivas is currently being held in the Bexar County Jail on $105,000 bail, according to the outlet.
Police say Barbosa’s ex-girlfriend Melanie Sierra Gomez, with whom he shares two children, allegedly orchestrated the stabbing alongside Rivas, who is the ex-boyfriend of Barbosa’s new girlfriend, the outlet reports, citing an arrest affidavit.
Prior to Rivas’ arrest, Gomez was arrested on Feb. 24 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records viewed by PEOPLE. She was released on bail on March 4.

Gomez, 32, was on probation when the crime occurred, according to jail records viewed by PEOPLE. Gomez agreed to postpone sentencing on a 2024 charge of “terrorist threat causing fear of imminent serious bodily harm,” according to Express news.
Barbosa was stabbed at the Davis-Scott Family YMCA located at 1213 Iowa Street, according to the news outlet, citing police. He suffered injuries to his stomach and arms, requiring surgery at a nearby hospital, and police were led to the suspects because he was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time of the attack.

At the time of the incident, Barbosa was completing a custody transfer, giving her children to Gomez, the outlet reported.

After the assault, Rivas allegedly entered Barbosa’s car and drove her from the scene, leaving Gomez stranded, although she left the scene shortly after, according to KENS. Barbosa survived his injuries and is cooperating with investigators, according to the media outlet.
