Two cheetah cubs narrowly escape the illegal pet trade

In an intervention that could one day inspire the animated animal version of Argothe Cheetah Conservation Fund and the Somaliland Ministry of Environment and Climate Change rescued two cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) cubs on the verge of a terrible fate.
The Cheetah Conservation Fund carried out the extraction after receiving urgent information that traffickers in Somaliland’s capital were about to load the two cubs onto a boat and take them illegally into the exotic pet trade. Hours later, the organization set up a rescue team and worked with local authorities to take possession of the cheetahs.
The next day, the cubs ended up at the Somaliland Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Center, where veterinary and wildlife experts will care for them. The conservation center opened in Somaliland in 2016 by Laurie Marker for cheetahs removed from the illegal wildlife trade. Currently, 125 rescued cheetahs live at the facility.

âThis result is a testament to the speed and dedication of our team and partners on the ground,â Laurie Marker said in a statement emailed to Popular science. She founded the Cheetah Conservation Fund and established the Cheetah Research & Education Center in Namibia. âWith fewer than 7,000 cheetahs remaining in the wild, every life we ââsave matters, not only to the species, but also to the ecosystems it supports. »
The cheetah cubs are just two of at least 21 other cubs recently rescued, a figure that highlights the continuing scale of the black wildlife trade in the region. The Horn of Africa, which includes Somalia/Somaliland, is unfortunately a center for the illegal trade in cheetah cubs. Somaliland is a self-proclaimed republic located in northwest Somalia, without international recognition.
Trafficking attempts often leave recovered cheetahs severely dehydrated and malnourished. In fact, researchers estimate that a shocking proportion (90%) die before their potential buyers receive them. Fortunately, the duo in question recovered quickly.
