They have lost all of their last seven league matches and are currently bottom of the division with four matches remaining.
In a statement, club chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “Lessons will be learned, we have proven we can get out of League Two, and now the aim is to get back to League One as quickly as possible and we are all focused on that.”

The Cobblers were 12th in December after a 3-1 home win against AFC Wimbledon, but a run of just one win in 16 matches led to the sacking of then-manager Kevin Nolan.
Despite the appointment of interim boss Colin Calderwood, results have not improved, with the team losing every game since the change in management.

Thomas added: “We are obviously extremely disappointed with the way this season has ended.
“The results over the last three or four months just haven’t been good enough. To be where we were at Christmas and then drop so significantly really hurts.
“We completely understand the pain and everyone at the club feels the same.”
Speaking on BBC Radio Northampton after the relegation, supporter Martin Maloney said: “It’s been an absolute disaster since Christmas.
“I don’t think anyone had any hope [they would stay up,] and I just hope [the team] end with a bit of combat.

Another fan, Keeley Wilson-Townsend, said: “There’s none of us who feel like we’ve had a hotter season.
“What’s worse than the performance…is the candidacy. I didn’t feel like the team was gelling. Something is wrong in 2026.”
