Summer gets its official start in the Northern Hemisphere with the arrival of the summer solstice. The sun will trace its highest, longest arc across the sky Friday, making for the longest day and shortest night of the year. It’s the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, where it will be the shortest day of the year and winter will start. This is because as the Earth travels around the sun, it does so at an angle relative to the sun.
