At least 12 people have been killed, including a child, in southern Lebanon, as Israel continues its strikes despite a ceasefire.

Israeli forces killed at least eight people on Friday in Habboush, Nabatieh district, and injured at least eight others, including another child and a woman.

Lebanese Civil Defense searched through the rubble from “the series of massive airstrikes that destroyed a residential neighborhood,” Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto reported from the southern Lebanese city of Tyre. “The images that come out are really dramatic, with buildings completely flattened.”

“We continue to see this same type of strategy across the country,” Hitto added. “Strikes took place today that killed and injured many more people in at least six other locations in southern Lebanon, including women and children. »

Four other people were reported killed in other attacks near Tire and Nabatieh, the country’s National News Agency reported. Israel also demolished houses, a convent and a school on Friday.

Israel on Friday issued a forced evacuation order to residents of Habboush, located north of the Litani River. Arabic-language army spokesman Avichay Adraee asked people to immediately move at least 1,000 meters away in a message posted on social media before the strikes hit the village. He also attacked the city the day before without giving any warning.

At least 28 people were reportedly killed in Lebanon on Thursday.

Israel said its attacks targeted the Lebanese pro-Iran group Hezbollah, but many of those killed were civilians.

Hezbollah continued its attacks on Israeli forces and vehicles in Lebanon, claiming to have targeted a Merkava tank and other vehicles, as well as soldiers in Sur. Israel continues to occupy parts of southern Lebanon, which it calls a buffer zone.

The Emergency Operations Center of the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported Friday that 2,618 people have been killed and 8,094 injured since hostilities began on March 2. The number of deaths continues to climb despite the ceasefire negotiated by the United States, announced on April 17 and extended until May 17.

Israel and Hezbollah began attacking each other following the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, before Israel intensified its attacks in September 2024, killing the movement’s longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

A ceasefire followed in November 2024, violated by Israel more than 10,000 times. Hezbollah began attacking Israel again on March 2, following the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by the United States and Israel.
