Former Biden Aide Slams Biden DOJ for Stopping JetBlue, Spirit Merger

Neera Tanden, a former aide to former President Joe Biden, pointed out that people should ask themselves whether the Biden administration’s DOJ “stopping” the merger between JetBlue Airlines and Spirit Airlines was “the right decision” since Spirit Airlines has ceased all operations.
In a job on X, Tanden pointed out that as Spirit Airlines announced the end of its operations, “thousands of people are losing their jobs.” Tanden also said that while “it may have been” the right decision, an analysis of the situation “must take into account, as part of the equation,” the number of families affected by the loss of jobs at Spirit Airlines.
“Given today’s announcement that Spirit Airlines is closing and thousands are losing their jobs, I think we should honestly evaluate whether Garland’s DoJ stopping JetBlue’s merger with Spirit Airlines was the right decision,” Tanden wrote. “Maybe it was, but any analysis must consider as part of the equation the loss for so many families who have to decide.”
Breitbart News’ Lowell Cauffiel reported that when budget airline Spirit Airlines announced that all of its operations had ended, “17,000 people were left without work” on Saturday morning.
In an announcement posted on Spirit Airlines’ website, the company said it was “proud of the impact” its “ultra-low-cost model has had on the industry over the past 33 years.”
“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines began an orderly cessation of our operations, effective immediately,” the statement said. “To our guests: All flights have been canceled and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact our ultra-low-cost model has had on the industry over the past 33 years and look forward to serving our guests for many years to come.”
Breitbart News reported that in a video of an interview with CNN in 2023, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg bragged about how the Department of Transportation was getting involved in opposing a possible merger between JetBlue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.
