Incredibly, the Culver City High boys volleyball team has only played two home matches this season and still won a Southern Section Division 6 championship last week.

It’s a tribute to the ability of coach Joe Manzo and his players to overcome the unavailability of the school’s gymnasium after it was damaged by fall flooding.

Sophomore Ken Hasegawa has stood out this season. Senior Casey Brennan also knew how to overcome adversity. He left Palisades after the January 2025 fires closed his school and destroyed neighborhoods. His play was essential to winning the championship.

Culver City’s season ended Tuesday with a loss in the Division III regional playoffs.

This is a daily look at positive happenings in high school sports. To submit news, please email eric.sondheimer@latimes.com.
