Hecking irked by misfiring Wolfsburg’s “sloppy” attacking play against Paderborn
Head coach Dieter Hecking must have regretted VfL Wolfsburg’s offensive inaccuracies after their 0-0 relegation play-off first leg against SC Paderborn this evening.
“We have to blame ourselves for being too careless in the final third,” the 61-year-old said in his post-match interview, lamenting their early missed chances.

“Sometimes he missed the last pass, other times it was a technical error. In the end we had a few decent half-chances, although they could have turned into many more,” he added.
However, the coach of the Lower Saxony side who struggled against the decline made sure to pay tribute to his opponents and his own team, especially the strong performances from the rearguard of both teams.
“We didn’t make it [to score a goal] because Paderborn also defended better than in their recent 2. Bundesliga matches.
“They didn’t open up the spaces in the same way. Of course, we also had the luck you need in a relegation play-off, the ball didn’t end up going in.

“But other than that, we defended very well, we were extremely disciplined and we didn’t let ourselves get stretched.
“I said before the game that it was going to be two very close games. So for me, none of that came as a surprise,” Hecking concluded.
