Last night, the Washington Week with the Atlanticpanelists gathered to examine Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s role and influence in the Trump administration, as well as what his leadership could reveal about how he is trying to reshape the U.S. military.

Over time, there has been “a tradition of defense secretaries trying to downplay their overtly partisan behavior,” said Missy Ryan, an editor at The Atlanticsaid last night. “Because they are the guardians of America’s sons and daughters, they are trying, in the name of national security, to act more as nonpartisan actors.” But Hegseth, she argued, “has completely abandoned that tradition, and we see him turning to his role as a partisan fighter.”

Join the editor-in-chief of The AtlanticJeffrey Goldberg, to discuss this and more: Helene Cooper, national security correspondent at The New York Times; Jonathan Karl, ABC News chief Washington correspondent; Ryan; Vivian Salama, editor at The Atlantic.
