Tommy Troy, called up from Triple-A Reno on May 23, was set for his major league debut on Sunday, May 24. He’s in the Diamondbacks’ lineup batting ninth and playing left field.
Three rookies — Troy, Ryan Waldschmidt and José Fernandez — were in the Diamondbacks’ lineup as the team played the final game of a four-game series against the Rockies.

Manager Torey Lovullo said Troy got a late call-up while the team was awaiting medical test results on outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s hamstring.
“I feel very good about putting him in left field,” Lovullo said of Troy. “I feel very good about his ability to go out there and have quality at-bats. That’s what he’s done his whole career. That’s what he’s been learning to and refine even more as he’s progressed through the system. Great opportunity for him to go out there and just be himself.”
Waldschmidt, batting .340, moved up from the ninth spot in the order, where he’s been hitting, to sixth on May 24.
Why Diamondbacks keep Garcia in organization
Aramis Garcia is the Diamondbacks’ third catcher but essentially has been sharing the backup spot behind Gabriel Moreno with Adrian Del Castillo, because Del Castillo is often used as the DH.

On Sunday, Garcia was appearing in his fourth game of the season for Arizona. He was called up from Reno on May 19 and has been brought up, sent down and designated for assignment this season.
But the Diamondbacks have kept him in the organization because they like his baseball IQ and awareness, Lovullo said.
Garcia developed his swing over the past year, and when he was designated for assignment earlier this season, Lovullo encouraged him to stay with the Diamondbacks and go to Reno rather than sign with a new team and have to learn a different system.
“He knows our playbook. That’s part of it,” Lovullo said. “But he’s just a good baseball player and a good human being. We like that type of character.”

At Chase Field: Nelson is set to make his 11th start of the season. He leads the Diamondbacks’ pitching staff in home runs allowed with 11, but opponents are hitting only .224 against him. Nelson has been pitching fairly well of late, with his past three starts lasting seven, seven and 6⅔ innings. All three were no-decisions, but Nelson had 18 strikeouts to three walks in those three outings. He is 1-1 with an 8.80 ERA in three career starts against Colorado. … Quintana is a seemingly ageless wonder who at 37 is in his 15th season in Major League Baseball. His 115 career regular-season wins are the most for a native of Colombia in MLB history. He has a career ERA of 3.76, but is 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA in nine career starts against Arizona.
