5 Reasons I Refuse to Play Free-to-Play Games

There are tons of free extremely popular games: Fortnite,, Rocket league,, Fall guysand so on. I am happy that the players on a tight budget always have something to play – and I have played a lot myself – but I always hate the experience of free games for several reasons.

Microtransactions (obviously)

Although you can play all these games for free, they all try to make you spend money for purchases at stake in one way or another. It could be a seasonal pass, a cosmetic upgrade or a way to accelerate frustrating waiting times. Anyway, it’s essential and boring.

Of course, I fully understand that these games cost a fortune to develop, so they cannot be completely given for free. Their existence depends on people who make microtransactions in the game, and I appreciate that these purchases are almost always optional. You don’t do it need to spend money.

But that makes them no less frustrating. Free games constantly pedd their goods in contextual windows, loading screens, notifications, alerts, flash sales, etc. It is exhausting to try to ignore it all the time and it is an important factor that makes me prefer to spend money on a different game so that I can move away from launched advertisements.

Complicated interfaces

I have not yet played a free game which is not in the grip of a complicated, busy and intimidating user interface. Even titles with an incredibly simplistic gameplay, as Fall guysSurprisingly have convoluted menu screens, with noisy colors, tons of options and a lot to wrap your head when you start playing the game.

Presumably, the advantage is that it gives more options and increases the commitment for longtime players. The more time you spend with any game, the more you familiar with all these options. As the new updates decrease, the new features are added to the menus and that long -standing players will probably be able to find their way around them very well.

But I find these menus overwhelming and exhausting! When starting a free game for the first time, it normally takes me about half a minute traveling through all the options and trying to understand how to start playing a game. After that, I just try to ignore most of the options, but it’s always something that discourages me back to the game.

So much waiting time

Due to the nature of most free games, there is normally a lot of time spent waiting, instead of playing.

First of all, these games are constantly updated (in order to keep the long -standing players committed). But that means that you often sit down to play, only to see that you have to wait an update to download, initialize and install.

After that, if it is an online multiplayer experience, you will probably spend a lot of time waiting in a hall for a game to start. Depending on the nature of the game – for example, if it’s a royal battle – you can die in a few minutes and be back to wait for the next match. Of course, I could “become good” to avoid this problem, but why bother when it will always imply as much waiting as I build my skills.

In addition to that, many free games, such as life sims and basic manufacturers, incorporate the expectations in the gameplay mechanisms themselves, to make you come back later, to encourage purchases in play that reduces the wait. You may be waiting for a warframe to be built, a harvest is growing or rewarding. Anyway, it is another great frustration that prevents me from playing the game.

Poor optimization

Almost all the most popular free games are available to play on each major console. But that does not mean that they work well on all these consoles. In particular, I refer to Switch ports for these games, because it is the console that I have.

Even if you don’t worry about losing more games because of your under-effective console, the lowered gameplay experience always rejects me to return to these games instead of starting something that has been expressly designed for my console of choice (or simply goes much better).

I don’t want an endless gameplay

This last point is perhaps a problem “me”, but it is a great consideration. I like my games to have an end point. I’m not trying to spend the rest of my life playing a single game, and I don’t like to leave a game with an unfinished feeling. But by their nature, almost all free games are designed to last forever.
