Philadelphia – Jahan Dotson was playing to catch up all last season. It was not something that the old first round choice wished him, nor wanted his third year playing in the NFL.

The reality struck Dotson once he failed Washington. He was no longer the focal point of the offense, unlike his role in Penn State and in his first two seasons of the NFL. The figures did not appear in the box score or targets on the ground.

For any wide receiver, it is a hard pill to swallow.

“You know, younger me would not have managed this very well,” said Dotson about his lack of targets during his first season with the Eagles. “Being a receiver, obviously, everyone wants the ball. It is only part of who we are.”

Dotson knew he was not going to be the high volume goal he was in Washington. Not in an offense that had already AJ Brown and Devonta Smith as the two main wide receivers. Philadelphia’s third broad receiver barely obtains targets such as, so that Eagles were not a franchise that Dotson could use production as a means of recovering his career.

A whirlwind of a season

The fact of being exchanged in Philadelphia was the awakening that Dotson needed after having fought in Washington. After only two seasons with the commanders, Dotson fell into disgrace with the new coach staff (the offensive of Kliff Kingsbury). There was a remainder of the Old Regime under Ron Rivera, the same choice of first round which had two different offensive coordinators during its first two seasons in Washington (Scott Turner and Eric Bieeniemy).

The commanders therefore found a lessee in the Eagles, who thought enough of Dotson for having abandoned a choice of third round and two choices of seventh round to acquire it. The Eagles received Dotson and a choice of fifth round, hoping that they could finally win a coherent receiver n ° 3 for their offense.

More high -end, Dotson had to grow. If he didn’t do it, his career in the NFL would have taken a tour for the worst.

“Being exchanged here (and) realizing that, you know, your work in the NFL is not sure wherever you go,” said Dotson. “You must be on your PS and QS. … It’s bigger than me at the end of the day. I have a family to feed.”

Dotson adopted his role as he learned the offense, creating the coach of the Eagles Nick Sirianni for having caught up quickly. It was exchanged at Eagles only 15 days before the start of the regular season of 2024, so the accelerated lessons started.

“Last year was a big learning process for me,” said Dotson. “Learning offensive, learning how things are going here, being presented to a new organization. But I felt that I recovered it very quickly.”

The reversal

Dotson accepted that the targets were not going to arrive very early, having only one match with more than three targets before the final of the season in the week 18 (when the Eagles rested all their starters). He had 10 targets in an 11 -week section before having seven captures for 94 yards in the season’s final against the giants, showing Eagles what he could if it was called to be a high volume receiver.

This is not the role of Dotson, and he agrees with that.

“Everything that is asked for me, if it runs a clear road, if it catches a bubble screen, if it will be my only target of the day – it will be my only target,” said Dotson. “I have to get the most out of it.

“You can throw me everywhere, X, Y, Z, F – And I’m going to do my job. I’m going to get there. That’s why the team looked for me a little. Being a kind of candle when we have to play. I will take advantage of my opportunities when they show up.”

Dotson had only three caught in the playoffs, but two of them triggered the Eagles to the victories. He caught a touch of 11 yards of Jalen Hurts on the first possession of the Eagles in the victory of the Joker-Card over the packers, freshly out of the heels of this match of seven games against the Giants.

His number was rarely called in playoffs, but when the Eagles rang – Dotson replied. In the Super Bowl Lix, with the Eagles confronted with a second and 11 of the 28 yards line of the chiefs, the game design was in Dotson – and Hurts struck it for a gain of 27 yards with a noisy tumult of the superdome crowd. The game was initially ruled on a touchdown, but Dotson was tried just short of the goal line.

The Eagles scored in the next game and never looked back in the 40-22 victory, justification for Dotson after a whirlwind of a season. Dotson finished with two catches for 42 yards in the match, showing the Eagles they were right to trade for him.

All because he bought their culture.

“Being able to come here and playing alongside guys and learning from them, it really helped me grow as a player,” said Dotson. “It is up to me to do my job at best my abilities. This is what I will do every time I am on the field. I will do what I am supposed to do and be where I am supposed to be. Make the pieces that I am supposed to do.”

Complete off -season in Philadelphia

Unlike last year, Dotson was able to spend all the Minicamp and the training camp with the Eagles. He had the opportunity to build his chemistry with Hurts, descend to Houston and work with the Eagles quarter to the connection is even stronger.

Having a complete off -season with Eagles facilitates the Dotson process in the season. The old first round choice is not a flame with this organization, rather knowing its role in the offensive and how if it can perfect it.

“It is up to me to produce. It is up to me to really come here every day and to do so,” said Dotson. “I felt like last year, I was taking along the way and it really was later in the season because I earned more confidence with Jalen and I knew the offensive very well.

“So it’s me. I had ota, a training camp this year, so I have no excuse. I will get there whenever my opportunity is called.”

Hurts has also experienced growth.

“You see improvements, but it’s more for him to come and find this feeling of comfort from where he is with this group,” said Hurts. “He came here last year very late, was a late addition, so he never was able to build this chemistry.

“I think that now he has an understanding of what he wants to do and the way he wants to do it. It’s just a question of comfort in this team and build his role and involve it.”

The Eagles did not picked up the fifth year of Dotson to be an old first round choice, which he expected. Nothing is guaranteed in the mind of Dotson, which makes him even stronger while he seeks to make the most of the second chance that the Eagles gave him.

“I thought I had grown mentally as a player last year,” said Dotson. “I feel like it will really help me this year.”
