ChatGPT’s new AI study mode won’t just give you the answer

OPENAI adds a new study mode for Chatgpt which “helps you solve the problems step by step instead of simply obtaining an answer”, according to an Openai blog article. It will be available today for free, more, pro chatgpt users and the team and for Chatgpt Edu users “in the coming weeks”.
When you ask a question with the activated study mode, Chatgpt can give you interactive prompts that combine “Socratic questions, clues and self-reflection prompts” to help you find out about your question. OPENAI also says that the responses in study mode will be organized “in easy to follow sections which highlight the key connections between subjects” and that lessons will be adapted to users according to “questions that assess the skill level and memory of previous cats”. The study mode can also give quizs.
AI companies are increasingly competing for the attention of students, with an anthropic Rival Openai introducing its own “learning mode” functionality for Claude in April. Tools like the study mode could encourage students to use Chatppt for learning instead of easy responses. But as users can deactivate the study mode at their own discretion, they will have to motivate themselves to really use the functionality instead of counting on chatgpt to spit a response or use the IA chatbot to cheat. (For the moment, Openai has no tools for parents or administrators to force students to stay in study mode, vice-president of education Leah Belsky Techcrunch.)
OPENAI says that the study mode is fueled by “personalized system instructions” that the company wrote with teachers, scientists and pedagogy experts. OPENAI has chosen personalized instructions because it allows the company to “quickly learn from actual comments from students and improve the experience – even if this results in inconsistent behavior and errors between conversations”. Below, Openai says that he plans to add clearer visualizations, objectives of the definition between conversations and “deeper personalization”.
Google has also announced new features today for some of its AI tools that could be useful for students. The AI mode in research obtains a new canvas mode that can help you do things like study guides, while the new Video Aperviews feature of Notebooklm uses AI to create slideshow with narration.
