Readers sound off on thinking clearly on climate, automatic weapons and former leaders

We all have to change to combat climate change
Manhattan: The repetitive heat waves and domes of heat that we have endured and make New Yorkers refresh themselves with open fire terminals should inspire us to take the “good state of mind” described by the emergency management professional Kelly McKinney (“always ready for a new emergency”, OP-ED, July 28).
Our emergency is the rupture of the mounting climate which is already on our doors. The good state of mind, according to McKinney, is that which is “devoid of false hopes”, the one that our leaders of Albany had fortunately six years ago when, devoid of false hopes themselves, they adopted the law on the protection of the climate leadership community (CLCPA). Wisely, the act included deadlines to clean our air and drop the fire. The deadlines have been integrated there to prevent future leaders – our current leaders – to look at the false hopes that made them flash by the fossil fuels industry and its supporters.
Such hope is that certain technological tips not yet discovered and not tested cancel the atmospheric damage that we now inflict on our world as if. Hopefully our leaders of Albany, in particular Governor Hochul, the head of the majority of the Senate of the State Andrea Stewart-Cousins and the Speaker of the Carl Heastie Assembly, will advance wisdom in the CLCPA phase and close this kind of false hope.
To help them achieve them, we all New Yorkers must assume McKinney’s emergency director ourselves and encourage our Albany leaders to remember the 2019 state of mind that they had when they really knew what type of heat waves and domes of heat came for us-and acted to prevent them. Lisa Meyer
Codified ageism
Catskill, NY: I am disappointed with Hochul and State Democrats for neglecting many opportunities to remove the age limit for police hiring. In particular, he should have ended when proposal 1 was approved by voters in November. Why did we modify the constitution of the state to protect people from discrimination if we want to ignore it? Do we plan to treat ethnicity, nationality, disability, sexuality, identity and autonomy with the same contempt? These are the other so-called protected categories and not recognizing that one establishes a precedent dangerous for all. In addition, the senator of the republican state George Borrello has presented bills to solve this problem for years. If politicians cared more about the immediate needs of the public than in bipartite policy, our head of the majority would have accelerated his bill for the greater good during this year’s legislative session. Instead, we are still waiting for Hochul to turn on things. John Pinder
Even old things
Staten Island: Once again, the MTA and our elected officials stick to the stiffness of work which must go to work or to visits to the doctor and to the hospital. Again, they lie and fled, saying that they only lost $ 700 million last year because of the robberies. Again, they believe that they can add congestion prices to subsidize the “poor” who take buses and metros, and 46% of them do not even pay. Again, they only increase the 10 cents bus and metro prices and the drivers are affected with an increase of more than 50 cents to pay the lowlifs who refuse to pay. And once again, the people of New York will vote for the Democrats who continue to punish the drivers. And our unions approve of these same democrats who continue to stick it to their members. Tony Anastasio
Power to power
Howard Beach: What does a Democrat do for New Yorkers? Let’s see. First, they say they need money to repair the public transport system, so they create congestion prices. But now they say they need a 3%price hike. We thought the price of congestion was going to cover this, right? Continue to vote for the Democrats, New Yorkers. After all, if you don’t have enough money because you are taxed higher than any state in America, you can find a second job and work weekends! And if the mayor of Hope Zohran Mamdani is elected, he will have to increase your taxes to cover everything he wants to give to New Yorkers, as less police and a free trip on buses. Oh, don’t you take New York Transit? Well, you will always have to pay for it. Nick Di Pasquale
Kill
Manhattan: “Editorial firearms are the problem” (July 31) emphasizes the continuous horror of unregulated war weapons. The second amendment indicates that the right to have firearms is authorized to those who are members of well-regulated militias-that is to say our reserves of the National Guard and the Army. Who benefits from the ongoing trade in machine guns? Companies that make firearms. Shame on this nation to have let a gun fill its goal on Monday evening – the goal of quickly killing people. Thank you for your cover of another sad story of sad mass murder. Noah Kaufman
Troubled minds
Brooklyn: Your editorial has focused entirely on the situation of firearms in this country. I agree 100% on everything that has been declared. The congress must do more to remove these firearms from the street. However, you have not mentioned the dark cloud that clings above us that is growing every day: mental illness. All the murders you mention were committed by someone who was mentally ill. In my opinion, this country is not enough for them. You cannot just prescribe a pill and put these people back on the street. How many innocent people should die because of someone who is allowed to walk in the streets that are mentally distorted? John de Angelo
Defenseless left
Brooklyn: A person constantly killed four people in the Park Ave building., Including a courageous NYPD officer trying to win an additional dollar to support his family. These people had essentially no chance against a semi-automatic rifle. Politicians say here that more stringent laws on firearms are necessary, but it came from Las Vegas. Our mayor and our governor made almost impossible for citizens who work hard in the city to protect themselves from disturbed mental people or violent criminals in the streets of New York, or even in public transport. The concealment and transport laws do not allow firearms in many places in the city, which is disturbing for the moment. The Supreme Court has authorized concealment and transport in New York and a few other states a few years ago, but due to the restrictions put in place and many steps to acquire a permit, people who can pass a check of the history are unable to defend themselves or defend themselves. Joseph Comperchio
To prevent
Staten Island: Most Manhattan’s commercial buildings, if not all, have a concierge / security office in the hall where you have to slip your employee card to access the elevator banks. I suggest sliding the card outside the building so as not to allow anyone else to access. For delivery problems and expected visitors / guests, I am sure it could all be developed with a certain strategic planning. Myra B. Goodman
Exploded
Manhattan: Will anyone tell Ice Barbie and his thugs that most immigrants, like Didarul Islam, are good people (“the relatives of the killed officer had planned a rally, now they plan funeral”, on July 31)? He died doing what he loved. He died by serving the others. Why was there no comments from Kristi Noem? I’ll tell you why. Because she knows that she is wrong in her point of view of immigrants. She should go to Alligator Alcatraz’s. Joy Anderson
Silence
Gotland, Sweden: Consider it as an urgent SOS! Where are the former leaders, like the presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, while the disturbed president Trump continuously violates his oath and all the standards of decency and humanity? Where are the former leaders of the first Trump presidency, such as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the head of the FBI James Comey and many other discharges who threw Trump 45 under the wheels of his bus? America needs to hear them – now! We join the crowd of loyal Americans who are dismayed by the insane sounds of the silence of former leaders whose voices, pens and computers must absolutely be raised at this moment of raw abuse of power and endless violations of common humanity and decency, leading to national and global danger. The need is great and the weather is short! Eugene and Birgit Elander
Refocused
Hammonton, NJ: incredible article of Cupp (“The Democratic Party must grow and go young”, Column, July 31). Zero mention of Trump. I didn’t think she could have done that. William Cook
