Greg Abbott Threatens to Expel Texas Democrats as They Thwart Redistricting

Texas governor Greg Abbott threatened to withdraw the “abandoned democrats” from the State House of Representatives if they do not return on Monday afternoon.
The threat intervened after many Democrats in Texas have left their original state and went to Illinois in order to prevent the state’s legislature from holding a vote that would approve of the republican redistribution cards.
In a letter to the Democrats, Abbott wrote: “Real Texans do not flee from a fight. But this is exactly what most of the Democrats in the Texas Chamber have just done … Rather than doing their job and voting on urgent legislation affecting the life of all the Texans, they fled Texas to deprive the Quorum Chamber necessary to meet and lead business.”
Why it matters
The threat of Abbott intensifies the confrontation on republican efforts to redraw the distribution card in Texas to strengthen the chances of the party to keep the Chamber of Representatives of the United States in the mid-term elections of 2026. The Republicans in other states confronted with important battlefield competitions have sought to follow a similar path.
The Republicans have a thin majority in the American House and the Senate, giving the Democrats hope to resume at least one of the Congress Chambers in the elections next year.

What to know
Abbott said in his declaration that the absences of the Democrats of Texas were “premeditated for an illegitimate purpose … The specific goal of the abdication of the functions of their office and thwarts the affairs of the Chamber”.
He said that their action was equivalent to “an abandonment or a forfeiture of an elected state office”.
He added: “This absence ends now. The abandoned members of the Democratic Chamber must return to Texas and be present when the room meets on Monday at 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
“For any member who does not do so, I will invoke the opinion of the Attorney General of Texas.
On Sunday, more than 51 Democratic members of the Texas Chamber left the State, aimed at refusing a quorum to the House and preventing the passage of the republican card proposed before a planned floor. The Texas House requires the presence of at least 100 of its 150 members to carry out business.
With only 62 democratic members of the Chamber, their collective absence can interrupt the legislative procedures.
Abbott had called a special session to tackle the floods that killed 135 people last month in Texas Hill Country and the redistribution plan.

The Democrats argued that if the Republicans succeed in redrawing the districts of Texas, Trump pushes other states to do the same.
Speaking in Chicago on Sunday, the president of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, Gene Wu, said: “We are not here to play political games. We are here to demand the end of this corruption process. Today is the day this corruption ends.
“If Donald Trump is allowed to do this, cheat again and run away, there is no stop, he will spread across the country … and will tear it away.”
Illinois governor JB Pritzker, Democrat, said that the Democrats in Texas had no choice but to leave their state to block the vote “and protect their voters”.
“Let’s be clear, it’s not just the rigging of the system in Texas. He fits the system against the rights of all Americans for the years to come,” he said.
What people say
Abbott declared in his declaration: “In addition to abandoning their offices, these legislators may also have committed crimes. Many absent democrats are requesting funds to escape the fines they will incur under the rules of the Chamber. Any democrat who” solicits, accepts or accepts to accept “such funds to violate the laws on violation. See Tex. Criminal code § 36.02.
“The same could be true for any other person who offers, confers or agrees to confer” such funds to the members of the Funite Democrat. I will use my complete extradition authority to demand the return to Texas of any potential criterion outside the state “.
THE Texas House Democratic Caucus Said in response to Abbott’s threat: “Come and take it.”
Colin Allred, A former Democratic candidate of the Senate for Texas, said in a statement: “The Democrats of the Texas Chamber just did what this moment requires – they broke the quorum to stop a blatant seizure.
“This fight does not only concern cards – it is a question of being able. When the Republicans silence black and Latinos voters, they are not only elections.
“Let’s be clear: they don’t just want to compensate for the vote. They want to use this power to compel the economy – to continue to help the rich and well connected while the families of workers allow themselves to be left.”
What happens next
The Texas Republicans are trying to find legal means to pass the proposed redistribution cards, although this can lead to a stretched legal battle.
The United States Supreme Court already examines a dispute over redistribution in Louisiana, and earlier this year, canceled the decision of a lower court which ruled that the card of the South Carolina Congress as unconstitutional.
