Google and Valve will kill “Steam for Chromebooks” experiment in January 2026

Bad news if you are one of the handfuls of people who use Steam to play games on a Chromebook: Google and Valve are preparing to end the support of the Steam Chromeos version on January 1, 2026, according to 9to5google. Steam can still be installed on ChromeBooks, but it is now delivered with an opinion announcing the end of the support.

“The Beta Beta Steam for Chromok program will be completed on January 1, 2026,” reads the notification. “After this date, the games installed as part of the beta version will no longer be available to play on your device. We appreciate your participation and your contribution to learning the beta program, which will light the future of Chromebook games.”

Steam was originally launched on ChromeBooks at the beginning of 2022 as an alpha operating on a handful of more recent and more specific devices with Intel fleas inside. A beta version later arrived that year, with a reduction in system requirements and support for AMD processors and GPUs. Enter at that time, neither Google nor Valve had talked about it a lot.

The beta steam was a component of a “chromebook of game” that Google made in 2022 and 2023. It saw the release of laptops with better equipment and high -rate screens and optimized versions of GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Google would have worked to add a steam support to Chromeos for at least 2020.
