Energy secretary: White House may alter past climate assessments

The Secretary in the United States of Energy, Chris Wright, said this week that the Trump administration planned to revise and potentially modify the country’s climate relationships.

During Tuesday on Tuesday on “The Source” of CNN, Wright told the host of CNN Kaitlan Collins that national climate assessments had been deleted from government websites “because we examine them”.

“We will publish updated reports on them and with comments on this subject,” said Wright.

National climate assessments have been mandated by Congress and have been published five times since 2000. Federal reports, prepared by hundreds of volunteer scientists, are subject to a review of in-depth peers and detailed how climate change affects each region of the United States so far and provides the latest scientific forecasts.

Wright accused the previous reports of being politically biased, declaring that they “are not fair data assessments”.

“When you enter the departments and look at things that are there and find reprehensible things, you want to repair it,” he said.

His statements occurred after the Trump administration in April rejected more than 400 experts who had already started working on the sixth national climate assessment, due to the end of 2027 or at the beginning of 2028. The administration also removed the website of the US global research program, which sheltered from reports.

This decision marks the latest climbing of the Trump administration to minimize climate science. The President and the Ministry of Energy defended the production of fossil fuels and reduced funding and incentives for renewable energy projects. This week, the Department of Energy published an image of coal on X alongside the words: “It is an icon, it’s a legend and it is the moment.”

Meanwhile, the American environmental protection agency has offered more loose regulations for polluting sectors such as power plants and vehicles. The administrator of the EPA, Lee Zeldin, proclaimed that the administration “led a dagger directly to the heart of the religion of climate change”.

In its CNN appearance, Wright said that previous climate change assessments – including the 2018 report prepared during Trump’s first term – were not “a reasonable representation of the vast climate science”.

“They have been more politically led to a real problem, but a problem that is not very close to the biggest challenge in the world,” he said about climate change. “No one is a credible economist or scientist believes that this is the case, except a few activists and alarmists.”

Environmental experts were concerned about Wright’s comments.

“Secretary Wright has just confirmed our worst fears – that this administration plans not only to bury scientific evidence, but to replace it with lies outright to minimize the aggravation of the climate crisis and escape the responsibility of sheltering it,” said Rachel Cleetus, director of policies for the climate and energy program to the Union of Scientists concerned, which was part of the authors administration.

“This is an more alarming example of the continuous and highly politicized effort of the Trump administration to obscure scientific truth in order to continue its dangerous and deadly agenda in pro-fossil fuel,” said Cleetus.

The Department of Energy last week also published its own climate report, commanded by Wright, which questions the seriousness of climate change.

Daniel Swain, a climatologist from the University of California and natural resources, noted in an article on X that national climate assessments were written by hundreds of scientists who were at the head of experts in the field in their fields.

“This would mark an extraordinary level of interference, unprecedented and alarming in what has historically been a fair and systematic process,” said Swain about the possibility that previous reports can be modified.

The Ministry of Energy did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
