It is a known fact that Microsoft is really in the drop in its services in the throat of people. But I have not seen any attempts to do it that are as blatant as it is. Microsoft will allow you, after all, to continue to update Windows 10 after its EOD date, if you agree to do a little something.
As a reminder, Windows 10 support ends on October 14. It was a distant date, but it is getting closer and closer to each time. If you cannot go to Windows 11, either because of the technical requirements, or because you do not wish, you can get an ESU that will allow you to continue to obtain updates for a year. This is a paid update of $ 30, but Microsoft now offers you some options to allow you to get the update for free. The most reasonable is that you “use Windows backup to synchronize your cloud settings”. In other words, if you want to stick to Windows 10 and don’t want to pay money, you will have to start using OneDrive. Other options include payment of $ 30 and the exchange of 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
It is an intelligent way for Microsoft to mess around more OneDrive users while obtaining people an additional year of updates (which Microsoft was going to offer anyway). It may not seem so bad for some people, until you realize that Microsoft OneDrive has only 5 GB of free space. And yes, Windows backup counts against this. Depending on the amount you really save, you could quickly run against your limit, which means that if you want to use Windows backup seriously, you will have a monthly subscription anyway.

Forcing people to use a service that they would not use otherwise in order to continue to obtain Windows 10 updates is a kind of blackmail. And it will unfortunately work – many people are stuck permanently on Windows 10 because they simply cannot officially install Windows 11 on their computers. Many users will just have to get a new computer if they want to update to Windows 11, and it will be an expensive upgrade for many. A decent laptop can start at $ 500, and you may want to spend a little more if you get a desktop computer.
If you already use Windows backup (which East Useful, but it is still not cool to force someone’s hand to use your service), you will automatically register for Microsoft ESU, giving you security criticism updates until October 13, 2026, how much you will certainly have to get a Windows 11 PC anyway. So consider it as an additional year to save money and review your options.
