Colts name Daniel Jones starting QB over Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis – The Battle of the Colts Quarterrier is over.
Colts coach Shane Steichen selected Daniel Jones to be a quarter-back from Indianapolis, opting for the acquisition of the veteran free agent on the choice of the first round in 2023 of the club, Anthony Richardson Sr.
“I think the guys took him. He is an excellent communicator with the guys. You can see this veteran presence there. So I am excited for that,” Steichen said on Tuesday.
When asked if this should be a permanent decision, Steichen said about Jones: “He is our quarter-arre leaving for the season. I don’t want to have a quick leash on this subject. I feel confident in his abilities.”
The colts signed Jones in March for a one-year contract of $ 14 million, claiming at the time that they provided an open competition between the former quarter of the Giants of New York and Richardson.
Richardson’s injuries and inconsistency aroused the decision to add competition, but he responded with a solid training camp and encouraging pre-season performance. There did not seem to be a lot of discernible separation between the two -quarters of the camp, but in recent days, Steichen stressed that meticulous factors would be looming in the decision.
“He always learns, still growing up. And for the first time in his career, it is an opportunity for him to sit at the start of a season and learn in a different light and attack him in the right way,” said Steichen about Richardson.
For Jones, the news validated her decision to join the colts in a free agency, bet on himself to win the quarter-back competition.
“I think it was obviously a big piece of the reason I came here – to be on the field and be with this group,” said Jones. “I think it’s a solid group of players, as I said, and a solid group of coaches, the system.
“I think there are a lot here to be excited, so yes, I am certainly happy to have made the decision.”
Richardson, meanwhile, tried to understand how to proceed.
“”[Steichen] made a decision, “he said.” This is the decision with which we have to live, but no resentment, nothing personal. I must continue to grow. I can’t let myself not be a starter prevents me from going and being the person, the player I am supposed to be. “”
Richardson said he thought he had progressed as a player during his candidacy to win the position.
“I feel like I have taken great steps in many ways in my preparation, my knowledge of the offense and the intensity I put in work on my leg game,” he said. “So I deliver the ball in the right place and I make sure that my mind is in the right place so that I can make the best decision for the team. I just feel like I made a lot of growth, but there is still a lot of growth to take, so I’m just working.”
The decision gives Jones an ideal opportunity to resuscitate his career after his six seasons with the Giants ended suddenly and without ceremony last season, when he was banished before being released.
The Giants used the sixth choice of the 2019 draft on Jones, which started 69 games for New York. His figures have plunged in the past two seasons, when he posted two of the lowest QBR brands in his career in 2023 (36.3) and 2024 (47.8).
Richardson finds himself with an uncertain future. The colts publicly declared that he did not need to win the quarter battle to have a future in Indianapolis, but we do not know where he is going from here.
The colts will have to make a decision on the fifth year team option of Richardson for the 2027 season.
Ironically, Steichen was one of the noisiest voices that pleads for the selection of Richardson in 2023. He now finds himself making a decision that could influence Richardson’s future with the franchise.
When asked if he considered the long -term implications of this decision, Steichen said he couldn’t afford it.
“I think this league is a league from one year to another,” he said. “And I do what I feel best for the colts in 2025 and I have to make these decisions. This is what I am paid, and I have to go with what I think is good.”
