Brain implant lets paralyzed patients control Apple devices with thoughts

A new cerebral implant now allows people to control Apple devices, such as iPads, iPhones and Pro Vision, only using their thoughts. Synchron, an endovascular company of the news brain interface (BCI) based in New York, demonstrated the first wireless BCI that works with the official Apple protocol.
Ten patients received the implant: six in the United States and four in Australia. With this technology, users living with severe paralysis can navigate in applications, send messages and operate hands -free devices. This breakthrough considerably extends independence, because it allows patients to manage their environment, broadcast emissions and control intelligent house devices, all using only their mind.

A first for the brain and the apple
Synchron is the first company to connect a cerebral implant directly to Apple devices using the official Apple’s official human interface (HID) protocol (HID). This means no personalized hack or bypass. The system simply connects to Bluetooth, just like a keyboard or a mouse, and works with iPhones, iPads and even Apple Vision Pro. In a powerful video shared by Synchron, the patient of the SLA Mark Jackson demonstrates the technology in action. After losing the use of his hands, he is now able to navigate his iPad entirely with reflection. This includes opening applications, composition of messages and staying connected with people he all likes without moving a muscle.
Behind the scenes, the synchron system uses artificial intelligence to decode the brain signals and transform them into digital controls in real time. Automatic learning models interpret the intention of the engine, like thinking about typing your finger and translating this into actions on the iPad. This decoding powered by AI helps the system to feel fluid and reactive as users learn to control it with concentration alone.

The signal resistance counter that changes the situation
A surprising new feature is the integrated signal resistance counter. This visual signal shows patients how strong their brain signal is in real time. A blue box appears on an icon or an application and fills according to the way the system clearly reads the user’s intention. It may seem simple, but it’s a huge matter. It helps users like marking refine their mental concentration, adjust their posture and improve their interaction without external help. It’s like seeing your brain in action and learning to lead it better. “When I lost the use of my hands, I thought I had lost my independence,” said Mark in the video. “Now, with my iPad, I can send a message to my loved ones, read the news and stay connected with the world, just thinking.”
