Brazilian policy weakens shark conservation | Science
In April, the Ministries of Brazil of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Environment adopted the inter -ministeral order n ° 30 authorizing the targeted fishing of the blue shark (Glauca pawn) in national and international waters (1). Although presented as a sustainable fishing measure, the ordinance considerably weakens the conservation of sharks and contradicts Brazil’s international commitments under the International Trade Convention of Threatened Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) (2). The Brazilian government is expected to reassess this order through a transparent scientific process and speed up shark conservation measures.
