“Now, please welcome one of my DFL of Minnesota friends, the treasurer, his name is Lindy Sowmick, who is from the Saginaw Ojibwe nation and she will deliver our recognition of land today,” said Martin.
Land thanks are often used to recognize the “indigenous peoples” who would have “possessed” the land where an event takes place, according to PBS.
“Hello, DNC members, friends and parents, let’s talk about the earth for a second. The DNC recognizes and honors… Dakota, who are the original commissioners of the land and waters of Minneapolis. Dakota took care of land, lakes and … Great River, the Mississippi river for thousands of years before colonization, “said Sowmick. “This land has not been claimed or exchanged, it is part of a story of broken treaties and promises, and in many ways, we always live in a system built to suppress the cultural and spiritual history of indigenous peoples.”
“As a democrats, I ask each of you not to allow land thanks like these, just check a box,” said Sowmick. “Be curious, ask questions, make sure our native neighbors are heard and work in partnership with your indigenous communities. Honor the heritage of this land and its inhabitants by committing today with honesty, humility, respect and compassion. Thank you so much.”
