Two people died after contracting an eating bacteria from eating raw oysters in Louisiana, said a state health official.

Deaths were due to Vibrio Vulnificus, a bacteria that occurs naturally in hot and more common coastal waters between May and October.

Vibrio bacteria can cause a disease when an open wound is exposed to coastal waters or when a person eats raw or under-cuite seafood, according to health officials.

In addition to the two deaths related to oysters, two other people with bacteria died this year in Louisiana, according to the Department of Health of Louisiana.

“Many people infected with Vibrio vulnificus can become seriously sick and require intensive care or amputation of members,” said the ministry. “About one in five people with this infection dies, sometimes in a day or two to become sick.”

The state has experienced “a higher number” of vibrio vulnificus and death cases this year, the ministry said.

So far this year, 22 cases that have led to hospitalizations have been reported among the residents of Louisiana. More than 80% of the reported cases arose from the exposure of the wounds open to sea water.

“During the same period in the previous 10 years, an average of seven cases of Vibrio vulnificus and a death were reported each year in Louisiana,” the ministry said in a press release in July.

The deaths linked to the Oyster were reported this week at a meeting of the Louisiana Oyster Task Force which included a presentation of data on all the diseases linked to the consumption of oysters in Louisiana.

One person was a resident of Louisiana, and the other was outside the state, said the spokesman.

In Florida, the State Health Department reported 23 cases of Vibrio Vulnificus this year, leading to five deaths.
