The recent Windows 11 security update has not caused these SSD failures, according to Microsoft (via Bleeping Computer). But the deep cause is still unknown.

Users began to report their SSDs and hard drives to break shortly after installing an Windows update (KB5063878), published by Microsoft on August 12. The problem was noticed for the first time by Japanese users who reported stranded and corrupt discs when working with large files or many files on SSD which were more at 60% and had the new update installed. Users have reported problems with SSD readers from brands such as Corsair, Phison, Fikwot, Maxio and others.

Microsoft investigated the problem and said they were unable to reproduce the problem, finding no link between Windows 11 update and brick discs. “After an in -depth survey, Microsoft did not find any connection between the Windows security update in August 2025 and the types of hard drive failures reported on social networks,” said Microsoft in an update of the service alert reported by Bleeping Computer.

Microsoft worked with the controller manufacturer Phison to study why the SSDs with their fleas failed. Phison also said that he was unable to reproduce any problem, but “continues to closely monitor the situation in collaboration with our industry partners”, in a press release in Neowin.

Until the deep cause is determined, PHison advised users to use a thermal sink or thermal stamp to prevent the device from overheating during long heavy sessions. In addition, a spokesperson for Phison said that users with more than 60% storage used should “avoid downloading, copying or writing large files” that are in dozens of gigabytes.
