You Can Put Your Driver’s License on Your iPhone If You Live in One of These 9 States

Your iPhone has essentially made unnecessary physical passes, and now Apple wants to do the same for driver licenses, with a digital version on the Apple portfolio that people can use to identify the verification or obtaining airport security.

Currently, a selected number of states currently allows you to add your driving license to the Apple portfolio. People who allow Apple Wallet’s functionality will be able to use their iPhones to pass TSA control points at airports for a much more SNAPP safety experience.

It will take a while before all states have an operational digital identification system. Below, we will cover what states are currently supporting digital IDs via the Apple portfolio and how to add one to your iPhone. In addition, we will review some of the new features directed towards Apple Wallet once iOS 26 later published this fall.

What states support digital identifiers on iPhones?

Only a handful of states supports digital IDs in the Apple portfolio. A key factor is the way each state implements its mobile driving license system. For example, Louisiana, New York, Utah and Virginia all take care of mobile driver licenses, but require separate applications for digital identifiers.

States and regions that support digital identifiers in the Apple portfolio:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico

Some states have initially been announced to support Apple’s digital id, but have not yet arrived.

The number of states supported in the Apple portfolio is about half of what the ASD currently allows. Collectively, he accepts digital identifiers on the Apple portfolio, the Google portfolio, the Samsung portfolio and the state -based mobile applications in 15 states.

How to add your identifier or driving license to the Apple wallet

If you live in a state that supports digital IDs for Apple Wallet, it is easy to add it. After being added, you will have to check your identity, which can take a little more time, but it is always a simple process.

  • Open Apple wallet.
  • Press the Add button.
  • Press the driving or ID license and select your location.
  • If necessary, choose if you want to add your ID to your iPhone only or both on your iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Follow the steps to scan your license or username.

(Make sure you scan your username in a well-lit environment and the photo is developed.)

Once scanned, you will be invited to confirm your identity with a selfie photo. According to Apple, it may be requested to finish a certain number of facial or head movements for identification purposes.

To ensure an easier verification process, Apple suggests:

  • Stay in front of a simple background with a neutral and light paint.
  • Be in a well -lit area, ideally inside.
  • Remove sunglasses, masks, hats or other accessories that could block your face.
  • Hold your stable iPhone.

When you are done, submit your information by confirming with Touch or Face ID. Your biometrics will be linked to the ID, so you can use it.

Transfer your digital identifier to another iPhone

If you improve your iPhone, you will need to transfer your identifier or driver’s license to it.

  • During the initial configuration, press Wallet.
  • Select your identifier.
  • Follow the steps.
  • Press to confirm that you want to move your driving license or username to the new device.

While states take the time to implement digital identification systems, Apple has announced a new feature to come in iOS 26 later this year: you can add a digital passport to Apple Wallet.

When this feature is available, iPhone users will be able to scan their passports to create a digital version for the verification of identity during interior travel. You will not be able to use it for international trips, and this is not a complete replacement for a physical passport (so keep your physique on you), but this should work at 250 TSA control points.

During its Keynote WWDC earlier this month, Apple said that the digital ID made from your passport can also be used “in applications and in person”, but it has given no details.

This is essentially what can be done on Android via Google Wallet.

It is also directed to iPhones this fall is an easier way for you to prove your age using your digital identifier. Let’s say you want to send a bottle of wine for you via Uber to eat. As a general rule, when the driver arrives, you will have to present your username and have it scanned to complete the transaction, but with the new verification with Wallet, your digital identifier stored will be used to check your age. (I wonder if things could become more complicated when delivery arrives if you are not the one who receives it.)

Check with Wallet will be supported by Chime, Turo, Uber Eats and Us Bank.
