New kickoff rule has improvements for 2025, but there’s still one change NFL needs to address

New York – The NFL had one of its most radical changes over the years last season, changing the start in the way football has never seen it before. The dynamic kick -off was created to look like a melee game by aligning the players from the two teams closer and limiting the movement to reduce space and speed, essentially creating less high speed collisions and promoting more feedback in the game.
The first year of the dynamic kick -off was an experience, hoping to provide a higher percentage of returns across the league. The league obtained what it wanted, as the return rate going from 21.8% in 2023 (in the old kick -off format) to 33%. The average position of the starting field increased from 25.6 to 30.1 while the average yield duration increased from 23.0 to 27.5.
Although the league saw more feedback, it was not the dramatic change that the league had hoped. Changes were to be made in 2025 to improve the dynamic kick -off, which the NFL planned after an experimental first season.
The significant change was the placement of the ball for a touchdown, because the starting field position is now the 35 yards line for a touchback. In 2024, the ball would be placed on the 30 yards line.
The league initially examined the line of 35 yards for the first year of the dynamic kick -off, but was satisfied with the 30. The league estimates that it will see a return rate of 65% to 75% with the Touch offset from 30 to 35, a huge increase compared to last year if the data is correct.
“I think the 35 yards line is quite severe,” said Bill Cowher, NFL TODAY Studio analyst. “You get two first Downs, then you launch a goal on the field. I think 35 was the answer a year ago. We still saw the kicks increase, but believe with the 35 now – the kicks come back (even more).
“I think it is definitely coming back and you are giving more and more guys at this next level. You will see more blockage and the feedback becomes more creative than they do.”
The NFL has brought significant change to the touch in order to improve the dynamic kick -off, but there is a huge skeleton in the closet which must be highlighted regarding the new format.

The change that has not been fully made
While the NFL has decided to continue the expansion of the return of kick -off, an important aspect of the kick -off being quietly passed by the edge of the path. The kick on the side is essentially a reflection afterwards in today’s match, because the league reduced the once strategic game to be called only when a team drags in the fourth quarter.
Essentially, a kick next to the reception team – and it is only when the kick team followed. There is no point in calling a kick on the new kick -off rule.
The league has changed the kick next this year. The teams can declare a kick on the whole match instead of the fourth quarter, but only when the kick team is dragging. The kick has also been removed in a courtyard while the ball will be placed on the line of the 34 yards, while the kick team will line up at 35.
The change of rule is intended to facilitate kicks on scale, because the kick team has historically experienced a low success rate. Last year, the side kicks were recovered from 6.45% of the time under the dynamic kick -off.
Since the prohibited race for NFL begins to kick off in 2018, the recovery rate next to 16.4%. The recovery rate fell to less than 9%.
The kick on the side has almost been eliminated from the game, and it will be difficult to recover it.
“It will be difficult. It will be very difficult,” said the NFL on the CBS color analyst Charles Davis. “I just want the element of that to come back, but I don’t know how we can do it with this type of kick -off.”
The biggest problem with the side kick for the moment is to announce that the kick is coming to the reception team. This removes the element of surprise, as Andy Reid has performed to open the 2000 season and Sean Payton did to start the second half in the Super Bowl XLIV. The two games led to victories for their teams.
“I have the impression that there should be a certain type of adjustment,” said NFL TODAY analyst Nate Burleson. “Say that you make the call and that you cut it instantly, and you cannot be penalized. I don’t like that at all. Where is the mystery in there?
“Why can’t you rotate it, or rotate it deeply? Why should it be so black and white, if placed in the stone on the kick on the sides.”
What can we do to repair the kick next to it?
If the NFL intends to eliminate the kick next to it, what alternative could be made for a dragging team? The Broncos de Denver and the Eagles of Philadelphia have proposed alternative solutions in the past two years that have been elected.
The Broncos offered a fourth and 15 line of 25 yards from the kick team. After a score, another offensive game of the 25 yards line on the kick team would be in force (if the team chooses it). A conversion would allow the team to keep the ball while a failed conversion would have made the defensive team get the ball in the place where the game ended.
The Eagles modified the proposal and proposed a fourth and 20 of the 20 yards line on the kick team. This proposal was also rejected.
“I think that some questions from a fourth at the bottom, a fourth and something after your score – because you got out with a surprise kick,” said Cowher about potential change. “There is really no way to go back to a game, right? So, a certain nature of a game, once you have broken down, you have the opportunity to go for that and to roll the dice. Whether it is a fourth and 15, a fourth and 20, whatever this game.
“You need something to be able to make a team come back from a deficit. In the past, the surprise on the kick was one of them. Now it has been kidnapped and a kick surprise is no longer really a surprise. It’s just a kick.”
With the background of the special teams, Cowher does not see a return for the kick. Having an attacking game and creating a new wrinkle in the game would bring the element of surprise, even if the team can announce that the game is coming.
A happy medium for a lost game.
“I believe that a kind of fourth game, when you are late after marking. The ability to recover the ball would be very, very exciting,” said Cowher. “Now, how you need to be able to build a penalty on this subject, because a team will try to throw it down to get a defensive pass interference. In one way or another, you will have to allow this game or this penalty like that so as not to become a factor.
“That it becomes a penalty of 10 yards, instead of the point of the penalty of fault. I do not know, a certain nature, so there is probably a logistics that you have to cross. But I think that a certain degree and an ability to recover the ball when you finish would be the next step.”
Perhaps the next step is to eliminate the kick on the side, but it is there to stay in 2025. The dynamic kick-off has improved, but the changes are not yet finished.
