‘I am a fighter’: ex-NFL player describes remarkable ordeal surviving suicide and financial abuse | US news

In five years, starting in 2015, the former quarter of the National Football League, Erik Kramer, tried in vain to die by suicide, then lost hundreds of thousands of dollars after a woman he married secretly looted the income of his life when he fought to cure.

Kramer nevertheless considers himself as an “extremely lucky man” and knows that his “recovery – mental and physical – was extraordinary by any definition,” he said in a test shared with the Guardian. Wednesday marks the release of a new documentary podcast aimed at unpacking its remarkable event.

The quarter-arre and the art artist revisits the victimization of Kramer in the hands of Courtney Baird and also rekindles questions about the toll on the bodies and the mind of American football players. These renewed questions come after a man who blamed football for giving him the illness of the incurable brain that Cte has fatally killed four people in the office tower which houses the siege of the NFL before committing suicide on July 28.

The series of 10 episodes alludes to neurological research establishing a link between sport and disease that can only be diagnosed with possible. And at one point, the host of the Podcast, Johnathan Walton, asks Kramer’s son, Dillon, “do you blame it for what happened to your father?”

Dillon replies: “I really think it is by far the biggest contributor. I don’t think he was aware of what was going on.”

Kramer, 60, played QB in the NFL in 10 different seasons, mainly from 1991 to 1999 for the Falcons of Atlanta, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and what was then the charges of San Diego. The native of Los Angeles is perhaps better known to team up with the renowned temple runner Barry Sanders to produce the only lions victory in the playoffs from 1957 to 2023. And in 1995, he also established records of a single season for most of the passing yards and the affairs that pass for the Bears.

Throughout these exploits, Kramer suffered from depression. And his condition took a turn for the worst when his 18 -year -old son, Griffen, who fought with drug addiction, died unexpectedly in 2011. Things then darken even more when – months later – Erik’s mother died of uterine cancer and her father was diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer.

Kramer finally brought a firearm to a motel room in southern California and used it to shoot itself, thinking in his sick mind – as his test said – “all my problems would be finished”. Miraculously, he survived and had enough money from his career in the NFL to pay for the medical treatment he needed later. The self-inflicted injury left him the mental capacity “of a six-year-old boy,” he wrote. He added: “I could not deal with complex concepts or decisions.”

It was then that Baird reinforced in his life after the two have already dated and broken.

What started with the loan of Kramer’s credit card for grocery shopping while presenting himself allegedly as “a dotting caregiver” has gradually degenerated to pay himself up to $ 700 for herself, costing him up to $ 15,000 per month.

Baird was finally brought to a legal account after a childhood friend of Kramer became suspect by seeing packages of the Amazon online market accumulating in front of his house. They were all sent to Baird and paid with Kramer credit cards.

Friend, Anna Dergan, checked the Bank Bank files from Baird and noticed withdrawal of daily automatic counters totaling thousands of dollars, excessive credit card transactions and cash advances and forged checks, according to Kramer. There was evidence that Baird had even drained Griffen’s commemorative account.

While Dergan called on the authorities to investigate Baird criminally, the latter arranged to marry Kramer during a courthouse ceremony to which none of his friends or family was invited. Kramer wrote that Maneuver was a “Metmate Move”, and the podcast explores how he embarrassed efforts to continue Baird for years.

He finally got back to the point where he understood that he needed to divorce Baird. Kramer says that she allegedly alleged the authorities that he had submitted to domestic violence on the same day that he informed her of his desire to divorce, which prompted the media coverage about him that he condemns as “defamatory”. He has been fighting since to correct the file since.

Kramer finally managed to charge Baird of a dozen crimes in 2020. She finally pleaded guilty of theft, theft of identity, counterfeiting and abuse of dependent adults – but only after Kramer was given to $ 700,000. This figure also includes the costs linked to the court incurred following his time with Baird and her pressure to obtain her marriage to her annulled.

During a hearing of determination of the sentence of August 2024, Baird, 52, received only six months in prison followed by probation, in part because it created $ 170,000 in cash as a return for Kramer, he wrote.

Kramer said that he has devoted most of his days since he had torn out “claws of an accomplice crook” to give discussions to various groups on mental health and signs of depression warning. He said he has held that he had challenged dark, with self-inflicted ball wounds with only 1% of attempted suicide attempted, not finished.
