The Pitt

John Carter by Noah Wyle was by far my favorite Er Character (suck it, clooney). So when I heard that the actor returned to the world of hospital dramas The Pittand the team behind Er was responsible for his creation to start, I was like an intubation tube (I clearly looked at a lot of these things).

I love this show on HBO Max because it can provide a much more realistic look inside the frantic, brutal and often disaster world Er Or Grey’s Anatomy never might.

Wylie embodies Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the chef attending the doctor in the trauma district of Fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, alias the Pitt. A large part of the program’s realism can be attributed to its 15 an hour episodes, which take place in real time during a single change of 15 hours exhausting in an emergency.

Chernobyl

It may not be the happiest show to slip during a weekend, but I guarantee you that you will not be able to detach yourself from the famous mini-series of HBO Chernobyl. Created by The last of us The writer / Creator Craig Mazin, the haunting series is a dramatic representation of the worst nuclear disaster in human history, the collapse of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Soviet Ukraine in 1986. The program opens by taking viewers inside the plant at the night of the event.

The disaster has triggered tons of nuclear radiation in the atmosphere, a fact that Soviet chemist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) puts in perspective to Russian chief Mikhail Gorbachev by telling him that “this gives the equivalent radiation of two bombs of Hiroshima every hour!”

Harris’ performance relaxes on the bone as Legasov, the man responsible for manipulating parody, sails on Soviet propaganda, the policy and the horrible effects that the influence has on the citizens of the neighboring city of Pripyat. Stellan Skarsgård also embodies the Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina, who beats heads with Legasov as the man in charge of the government’s response to the disaster.

When the show was broadcast in 2019, it was acclaimed for its realism and its performance, but it was also controversial, provoking conversations and even arguments on its representation of Soviet Russia, socialism and even realities of nuclear physics. Chernobyl is an essential series if you are interested in dramatizations of major historical events. It is a good thing that it is only five episodes, because it is an intense, but valid ride.
