Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said: “We are not Piñata”, on Thursday, denounced the Trump administration’s decision to sanction three Mexican financial institutions for undertaken money laundering allegations.
On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department accused Termina, Intercam Banco and the Casa de Bolsa brokerage vector of facilitating millions of transfers for drug cartels linked to the production of fentanyl, but Sheinbaum said that the United States had not yet provided concrete evidence.
“We are not going to cover for anyone … But they must demonstrate that there was in fact money laundering-not with words, but with solid evidence,” she said during her morning briefing.
“We are not piñata,” she added. “Mexico must be respected.”
The three institutions strongly denied the accusations, describing them as damage and not taken care of.
The dispute highlights increasing tensions while Washington seeks to counter Chinese influence in Latin America, American officials saying that transfers involved Chinese companies. Sheinbaum, however, developed banks’ ties with China as a routine trade and insisted that Mexico is treated with respect.
