California HS trans athlete fires back at critics

Ab Hernandez, a transgender secondary athlete in California who plays in the volleyball and athletics teams for girls, remained provocative among critics for having contributed to women.

Several of the opponents of Jurupa Valley this season have lost matches rather than playing a match against a team that has a biological man on it. Chaffey High School was one of the teams that agreed to play against Jurupa Valley, but they fell into Hernandez’s team in four sets.

Hernandez had no interest in giving criticism.

“They swear that I am like this crazy danger for society,” Hernandez told CBS Los Angeles in a recent interview. “I’m just a normal child who goes to school, playing sports.”

Hernandez’s participation in girls sports has become a flash point in effort to maintain the sports fair for women and girls. In the spring, Hernandez participated in the California High School state championships and won several events. California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has changed the rules of sport to allow a girl to share the podium with Hernandez.

The Trump administration has filed a complaint against CIF and California Department of Education (CDE) on its genre participation policies.

“I think people just see one thing and they are like” Oh, that’s what you are “,” added Hernandez. “They don’t take the time to know me. So it’s just a little frustrating.”

Hernandez received the noisiest acclaim of the night before the match against Chaffey, according to Outkick. A fan of Jurupa Valley wore a t-shirt with messaging supporting transgender activism.

Hernandez deplored the other schools that have chosen to give up their matches.

“A team sport, I can’t take this,” said Hernandez. “It’s a team effort. My team must be ready to fight with me and that’s what it takes to win a team title.”
