Venice Film Festival 2025 Winners

Update: In a turn of somewhat surprising events, Jim Jarmusch Father Mother Sister Brother Was crowned with the best Golden Lion prize at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The title of Mubi had not been considered a precursor, even if the opinions were positive.
This is Jarmusch’s first film to play in competition on the Lido and tells three stories exploring the relationships between adult children, their parent (or parents) a little distant and each other. Each of the chapters takes place in the present and each in another country.

The cast presents Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat and Françoise Lebrun.
Accepting the lion, Jarmusch recalled a speech delivered by Akira Kurosawa when he received an Academy Lifetime award, “he said something as if he feared that he still does not know how to do it, so I have a sort of the same feeling, I learn each time.”

The speech of emotional acceptance of director Kaouther Ben Hania paid tribute to the subject of the film: “Hind’s voice is the voice of Gaza itself … His voice continues to resonate until the responsibility is real, until justice is returned.”

PREVIOUS: The closing night of the 82nd Venice Film Festival is upon us, and with it the award ceremony which is about to start inside the Sala Grande. The main competition jury, led by the Oscar -winning filmmaker Alexander Payne, will focus on the next winner of the Golden Lion while distributing prices to act, make, script and more. This was occupied for almost two weeks on the Lido with the competition films very well received overall. This year also gave us what is considered a new record for an ovation in the Gaza-Set drama of Kaouther Ben Hania Hind Rajab’s voice. One of the most buzzing titles entering the festival, he was met with an emotional response, embraced in force by criticism (currently 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and could be the one to beat the Golden Lion this evening.
