Senate Republicans eye ‘nuclear option’ for rules change to speed up Trump nominees

Washington – Republican leaders are getting closer to the implementation of a major change in the rules of the Senate which would allow them to confirm the dozens of candidates by President Donald Trump in lots, rather than voting individually.

Republicans change to speed up votes on Trump’s nominees after pleading that the Democrats slowly work them in mass. Meanwhile, the best Democrat in the Senate warned them not to “become nuclear” at the service of Trump’s loyalists.

The head of the majority of the Senate, John Thune, RS.D., said that he planned to start the process on Monday, although he should continue next week before the change of rule became official.

The Republicans plan to use “the nuclear option”, a process where the power party can unravel the permanent order to define a new precedent, effectively modifying the rules with a simple majority. The tool has already been used by both parties to weaken the bareness rule to 60 votes for judges and to reduce the debate time for candidates.

“It is time to take measures to restore the precedent of the Senate and codify in the Senate rules of what was formerly considered a standard practice – and it is the Senate which acts quickly on presidential appointments to allow a president to set up his team,” said Thune Monday in the Senate. “And so this afternoon, I take the procedural measures necessary to modify the rules.”

The plan would apply to candidates who are subject to two hours of debate under the rules of the Senate, that is to say: the candidates of the executive branches, the choices of level of sub-capation and the ambassadors. It would not apply to judicial appointments. And this would allow the leaders of the Senate to vote on an unlimited number of nominees in a block, with a single vote upwards in the room to confirm or reject them all.

Thune criticized the Democrats for unprecedented levels of obstruction to refuse to allow rapid votes on one of Trump’s administrative choices. Democrats argue that Trump is trying to store the government with an unprecedented level of unskilled lackeys, guaranteeing historical control levels.

“If the Republicans become nuclear, the historically bad candidates that we have seen so far under Donald Trump will only get worse,” said the head of the Senate of the Senate, Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. “Sometimes it is almost as if – the more it is corrupt, the better because Donald Trump will completely control what they are doing. It is as if he wanted the Senate to confirm people willing to lie for him, to cheat on him. He wanted people who were ready to defend him without question.”

The Republicans say that their new rule for the Senate is vaguely based on a proposal for meaning. Amy Klobuchar, d-minn., Angus King, I-Maine, in 2023, which would have allowed the lower level candidates to be examined in the Senate in blocks of 10, rather than individually. The Republicans did not obtain democratic membership for their current plan.

Republicans will authorize their own senators to oppose a candidate included in the block. And if this happens, they will try to determine the socket with the senator or to remove the candidate from the block. This same courtesy will not be granted to the minority, because Democrats have practically a “maintenance” on each candidate of Trump.

The Republicans recognize that the previous one they have established can be used by a future democratic majority and president, as recognized by the whip of the majority of the Senate John Barrasso, R-Wyo,.

“You always think of what will happen when the shoe is on the other foot, and it will finally happen at one point,” Barrasso told journalists last week when he was asked if the Republicans will regret it. “But it’s a historical obstruction. We are trying to come back to the way it was before.”
