US Attorney Doesn’t Rule Out Civil Rights Charges Against Suspected Light Rail Killer

The United States Prosecutor Russ Ferguson of the western district of North Carolina said on Tuesday that the killer accused of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska could face additional charges.
Zarutska, who worked in a pizza restaurant in the region, was stabbed to death on August 22 on a Charlotte Light Rail train by DeCarlos Brown, a man with a long criminal story. Ferguson declared earlier at the press conference that his office had moved “fairly quickly” compared to normal cases to charge Brown less than 18 USC § 1992, making it a federal crime to use a dangerous weapon to cause death or injuries on a public transport system. “We are examining all the costs available in this case,” Ferguson told journalists. “If we see facts that it was motivated by gender or breed, we will absolutely bring a federal accusation on civil rights in this case. If the facts do not show that we will not do so. We will only provide an accusation of support for the facts, the investigation is underway, we think that we have the table fairly.

“I got this white girl, I had this white girl,” said Brown in the surveillance video published on Friday by the Charlotte Transit Authority while other passengers went to the help of Zarutska, while blood flowed from the knife on the ground of the train car.
Ferguson defended the decision to charge Brown, who could face the death penalty, bristled when a journalist asked if the accusation was “political greatness”.
“I do not see how you would see this affair as a political size. And if you do, you should have the conversation that we have just had with Iryna’s family, because there is nothing political on this subject,” said Ferguson. “This is a heinous crime and we are going to remedy it.”
“I do not know what politics is here. If it was a political platform, there would be a side opposite this,” he added forcefully. “Is the opposite side allowed to murder on our tram?” Does the other side let people get out of the state prison so that they can commit other crimes? There is no other side to that, there is no policy to this, it is a pure and simple federal case. ”
The incident has become viral on social networks after the authorities have published the video. Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, has produced several publications and also republished other users on X who discussed the murder. The conservatives on social networks have also commented on the lack of coverage of the corporate media, contrasting this in the number of corporate media covering the death of Jordan Neely, a man with a long record of arrest deceased after having been retained by Daniel Penny, 24, a veteran of the Marine Corps, on May 1, 2023.
The Manhattan district prosecutor Alvin Bragg obtained an indictment from Penny for manslaughter, but a jury acquitted Penny in December 2024.
