Rise in number of people in the UK facing hunger says charity

A third of children under the age of five live in British homes where this is not enough for access to healthy and nutritious foods, according to the anti-pauvreté Trust-chartell charitable.

The charitable organization surveys revealed that more than 14 million people in the United Kingdom faced the prospect of hungry last year due to the lack of money.

This marked an increase compared to the latest trust in 2022 when this number was 11.6 million people.

This government said it was “determined to tackle the unacceptable increase in dependence on food banks”.

The survey was carried out in two parts, the first by Ipsos (an organization of market studies) on behalf of the charity, which sent questionnaires to 4,427 random adults.

A second survey was also carried out by Ipsos, this time with 3,866 adults who had been referred to food banks.

There were also interviews with people who had not visited food banks but who were identified as being confronted with “food insecurity”.

Food insecurity is defined by the evidence and the network on the food insecurity of British households (engraving) as the lack of money to ensure reliable and constant access to food that meets food and nutritional needs.

Green says that it can be “acute, transient or chronic”, and varies from the severity of “worrying that it is not being able to secure enough food to spend whole days without eating”.

The figures suggest that three out of 10 people who have been referred to food banks come from working households, with one in four children in the United Kingdom living in what the charity calls for households without food security.

Helen Barnard, at Trussell Trust, said that he was told that the parents “lost sleep, cared about how they would pay new shoes, school trips, keep the lights on or allow themselves the bus price”.

She added: “We have already created a generation of children who have never known life without food banks. This must change”.

Ms. Barnard called on the government to approach the results of the investigation, referring to the manifesto of Prime Minister Keir Starmer to combat poverty and to end the need for food banks.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Labor and Pensions said to the BBC:

“In addition to extending free school meals and ensuring that the poorest children are not hungry during the holidays with 1 billion pounds sterling to reform the support of the crisis, our working group on children’s poverty will publish an ambitious strategy later this year.

“We also revise the centers of employment and reform the broken social protection system to support people in good secure jobs, while always protecting those who need it most.”

The other results of the survey of those accessing food banks included an increase in the number of people who worked – against a quarter of households in 2022 to a third party in 2024.

Those who have manual and service jobs have been the least affected, care workers and bus drivers have stressed as some of the workers who risk the most hunger.

Trussell Trust said low income was the main cause of hungry households in the United Kingdom.

The survey of persons referred to food banks revealed that households who access them would end up with an average of £ 104 per week to pay food, bills, work or school trips and essential toiletries.

This resolved 17% of what the average British household would have left after rent or mortgage payments.
