What’s Free on the Epic Games Store This Week?

It’s hard to believe that people can actually run out of new video games to play, but for some of you out there, that’s a legitimate concern. Who among us is going to say no to more games being offered to you — free of charge — when the occasion arises? With video game costs rising and tariffs looming, there aren’t many who wouldn’t take any free thing they can get. If that sounds like something you’d do, then we have something you should know about: the Epic Games Store.

The Epic Games Store officially launched in 2019, capitalizing on the massive success of Fortnite, a cultural phenomenon that has partnered with brands like Star Wars, DC, Marvel and celebrities such as Snoop Dogg and Sabrina Carpenter. Created to rival Valve’s Steam, the store stands out by providing free games every week, featuring a mix of indie gems and major AAA titles.

Now, be honest. Who doesn’t enjoy free games? If you would, you’ll want to jump in on the action and create an Epic Games account. Signing up for an account is free. Once that’s done, head over to the free games section on the official website every Thursday at 11 a.m. ET for weekly offerings. Sometimes there will be breaks, such as during the holidays, but usually you can expect at least one free game each week. On special occasions, such as Christmas, new games are released almost daily. But the best part? You can keep the games forever if you download them before a new game is added to the roster. This usually happens after a week of being free, so download the game while you can.

Console gamers need to be aware of a crucial point before getting too excited. The Epic Games Store is exclusively for PC users, meaning they are the only ones who can take advantage of the discounts and deals available. While the store offers games for Mac, the free titles are not always compatible with Mac systems.

If you’re a PC gamer on the hunt for your next adventure, look no further than the Epic Games Store. With a fantastic selection of titles available, this is your opportunity to explore exciting new games. Even if a game doesn’t immediately catch your eye, grabbing it at no cost is a smart move.

A journey through the desert from the Sable game

Shedworks/Epic Games Store

Sable

Now, there some games that are great, and then there are games that make you wish you could go back in time and play it again without knowing anything about it. Sable from Shedworks is definitely the latter. If you’ve not played Sable at least once, then you’re doing it wrong.

Developed by Shedworks and released in September 2021, Sable has players embark on a unique journey as a nomad named Sable. Exploration is truly key in this adventure, and you’ll often be rewarded for going off the well-treaded path to see what else is out there.

Sable is visually stunning with a variety of environments and mesmerizing landscapes. Whether you’re trudging over dunes or pushing through the remains of spaceships and other ancient wonders, Sable is genuinely one of the most beautiful games we’ve played. Not only will you feel wonder, but you’ll also be treated to a story that unfolds in such a mesmerizing way that you’ll never forget it.

If you’re still not convinced, we recommend checking out its numerous nominations from the video game industry worldwide. At The Game Awards 2021, it was nominated for Best Debut Indie Game and Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game. At the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, PC Gamer crowned it as Best Narrative of 2021. That’s just two of its accolades, but we hope you get the gist: Sable is the game to play.

Usually $25, Sable is available for free via the Epic Games Store. Epic Game Store customers give it a 4.5 rating out of 5, particularly enjoying how well-suited the game is for beginners, as well as Sable’s unique visuals and fantastic storytelling.

Two backpacks filled with tools and food from Backpack Hero

Epic Games Store/Jaspel

Backpack Hero

Not all of us can save the day with a trusty sword and little else, some of us prefer to actually have a whole backpack of things to slay our all-important archnemesis. Or at least, that’s the premise behind Jaspel’s Backpack Hero.

Backpack Hero is a deckbuilding roguelike that’s not just about what you can carry, but how you organize what’s inside. Placement is everything, and finding the right spot is vital for helping players increase their powers and tackle ancient dungeons, caves, swamps and other nasty beasts they come across.

As the unlikely hero in this adventure, the goal in Story Mode is to rebuild Haversack Hill and help its inhabitants by befriending them, as well as going on quests. As you continue, you’ll meet new residents and unlock new challenges and heroes.

If you’re seeking something a little different from your standard roguelike, then Backpack Hero is the way to go. You can play over and over thanks to its Story Mode and over 800+ items to gather and collect. It will keep you on your toes and satisfied no matter how many runs you take.

Usually $16, Backpack Hero will be available for free via the Epic Games Store next week. The Epic Games Store does not yet have an official rating for Backpack Hero. Still, reviews applaud its rich, replayable loop and describe it as a “thoroughly entertaining deckbuilding roguelike.”

A hand-drawn world in Figment

Epic Games Store/Bedtime Digital Games

Figment

If you’re looking for something a little whimsical that will challenge your brain and your gameplay brawn, then keep an eye out for the intriguing action-adventure game Figment from Bedtime Digital Games.

Featuring a hand-drawn world, players will take on the adventure of exploring the human subconscious. It certainly isn’t the first indie game that tackles the human mind through puzzles and enigmatic characters that you meet along the way, but has it ever looked so beautiful? That’s up to you to decide.

Described as a game that “deals with despair and loss whilst managing to be optimistic and uplifting,” Figment is perfect for gamers who enjoy tackling heavy topics while also exploring enigmatic worlds.

Usually $15, Figment will be available for free via the Epic Games Store next week. Epic Games Store customers give it a 4.5 rating out of 5, particularly enjoying how well-suited the game is for beginners, as well as Figment’s epic boss battles.
