A Number of Progressive Democrats Are Coming Out Hard Against Schumer Shutdown Deal – RedState

As details of a deal to end the government shutdown unfold, more Democrats are speaking out against the deal.

A handful of Democratic senators are working with Republicans on a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government, with a big part of that deal being a future vote on extending Obamacare subsidies for another year. But it appears that the lack of an immediate amendment to the current resolution to extend these credits as well as progressive concerns about President Donald Trump’s “authoritarianism” have alarmed progressive activists and progressive politicians quick to say “No.”

What does the current offer contain?

As previously reported, the deal pending in the Senate comes down to a promised vote on Affordable Care Act subsidies, which the government-run health care system uses to offset rising costs (primarily triggered by the Affordable Care Act). The deal also provides funding for three key appropriations bills (each link points to the Senate Appropriations website, where you can find the text of these bills):

  1. Summary of the Agriculture-FDA bill
  2. Legislative power
  3. Military Construction Bill Summary-VA

The deal would also immediately reopen SNAP funding, returning these funds to American families caught in the legal crossfire over these credits during this shutdown. The agreement also includes a measure to reverse the mass layoff of federal workers under OMB at the start of the shutdown.

Purpose of Progressive Democrats

A number of progressive Democrats currently oppose the deal. On the Senate side, Senator Bernie Sanders believes that “it would be a disaster for the Democrats”.

Several members of the House Democratic caucus also expressed objection. Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, vice chairman of the Democratic Party, said on social media that “any ‘deal’ that ends with Democrats getting only a small promise in return is wrong.” »

“The American people are suffering because Republicans refuse to stop skyrocketing health care costs,” he adds. “An agreement that does not correct this reality is grossly insufficient.”

Rep. Greg Casar of Texas said the deal would constitute a “betrayal of millions of Americans.”

Another progressive, Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts, said “Democrats need to stop playing by the old rules in a broken Congress,” while Michigan Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow said “Americans can’t afford this deal.”

When will the government reopen?

We could see a test vote as early as tonight, although the chances diminish over time. But the current plan would require the House to reconvene and pass this new spending bill. Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to formally call members back to Washington to begin passing bills again.

Johnson made it clear that he thought the House’s continuing resolution (CR) was more than fair and that Democrats, particularly in the Senate, were the problem. It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which Johnson would be eager to bring Congress back into session to vote on a different spending package, and conservatives might not have much courage to pass a bill that offers even remotely the hope of an extension of ACA subsidies.

For now, there appears to be no immediate end in sight. But negotiators on both sides hope to get results as early as this week. However, many factors – and most importantly, politicians – are involved in achieving this goal.

Editor’s note: Schumer’s closure is here. Rather than putting the American people first, Chuck Schumer and radical Democrats forced a government shutdown on health care for illegal immigrants. They own that.
